Use the lubricant—and the amount—specified in the owner’s manual for your exact firearm and lubrication point. There is no universal rule that grease is always better than oil: some manuals call for oil at particular moving parts, while others specify grease on particular contact surfaces. Before maintenance, verify the firearm is unloaded and follow its manual’s handling and disassembly instructions.
How to choose between gun grease and gun oil
- Start with the exact firearm’s current manual. Follow its lubrication locations and amounts. GLOCK likewise directs owners to consult the manual for model-specific lubrication instructions: GLOCK care guidance.
- Match the lubricant to the named contact point. A manual may call for oil on one moving part and grease on a particular contact surface. Do not assume that the same part on another firearm takes the same lubricant.
- Apply only the specified amount. More is not automatically better; excess can collect debris or interfere with function.
- Account for conditions without overriding the manual. Dust, debris, and cold can affect lubricant behavior. Check the firearm’s instructions for storage and after-exposure care rather than adopting a universal oil-or-grease storage rule.
What firearm manuals show
These examples illustrate why instructions cannot be transferred between models. Follow the manual for your own firearm, not another model’s example.
Springfield Armory XD-S pistol
The XD-S manual specifies drops of oil at particular slide-rail and barrel locations after field stripping as described in that manual. It says not to apply oil or grease to the striker. Springfield states: “Only a very small amount of oil is needed to adequately lubricate moving parts and prevent rust.” It also cautions that excess oil attracts dirt and can interfere with safe, reliable function. The Citori manual specifies grease on named hinge-pin, locking, and forearm-bracket surfaces, and oil at another specified point. This is a different pattern from the XD-S instructions, not a general shotgun or firearm rule. Browning Citori manual

Browning Buck Mark pistol
The Buck Mark manual recommends lightweight gun oil for its listed moving parts, frame-and-slide contact area, and spring guide, and warns against excessive lubricant. Do not apply those directions to another pistol. Browning Buck Mark manual
GLOCK pistols
GLOCK’s care guidance recommends regular cleaning and lubrication after firing and after specified environmental exposure, while directing owners to the model’s manual for lubrication points and quantity. It warns: “Too much lubrication can affect the pistol’s performance.” GLOCK care guidance

POF-USA firearms
POF-USA’s basic procedure describes a light application on bolt-carrier riding surfaces and recommends firearm-specific cleaning and lubrication products. It warns that excess lubricant can attract dust and debris, may congeal in cold weather, and may affect safe operation and reliability. It advises: “Excessive lubricant will attract dust and debris.” POF-USA cleaning and maintenance guidance
Amount and operating conditions matter
Use the quantity in the manual rather than adding lubricant until a surface looks wet or coated. Springfield’s XD-S instructions call for very small amounts; GLOCK warns that too much can affect performance. POF-USA identifies dust, debris, and cold-weather congealing as concerns with excess lubricant. These cautions do not establish one lubricant or amount for all firearms.

For cleaning products and lubricants, use products made for firearms where the maker calls for them. Manufacturer documentation includes Lucas Oil Extreme Duty Gun Grease and Lubriplate FMO Gun Oil and SFL Gun Grease as examples, not as proof of compatibility with every firearm. - Verify the firearm is unloaded and safe before maintenance.
- Follow the manual’s handling and disassembly instructions.
- Apply lubricant only at the named points, in the specified amount.
- Keep lubricant off parts the manual says must remain dry or must not be lubricated.
- Use the manual’s instructions for storage and care after exposure to dust, moisture, or cold.
The cited manufacturer instructions cover different firearms and do not form a universal maintenance procedure. If your manual is unavailable or unclear, consult the firearm’s manufacturer rather than borrowing a lubrication pattern from a different model.
