Choose a versioned source archive from the Linux Kernel Archives, download it, and unpack it into a working directory. The result is a source-tree snapshot—not Git history, branches, or refs.
How to download Linux kernel source without Git
- Choose a release. Open the official v6.x archive index and select the version you need. For ordinary builds or exploration, use a stable release rather than a pre-release candidate. Check the kernel.org release page for current release status; the archive listing changes over time.
- Download an archive. The index provides compressed source archives, including
.tar.xzand.tar.gz. Select the format supported by your extraction tools. It also lists detached.tar.signfiles. - Extract it. Use your operating system’s archive utility or a command-line tool that supports the chosen compression format. The kernel’s build documentation describes downloading a packaged archive from kernel.org, extracting it, and changing into the directory created by extraction. See How to quickly build a trimmed Linux kernel for the documented workflow.
- Work from the extracted directory. You now have the source files for the selected release without a Git checkout. Follow the kernel documentation for the build or inspection task you intend to perform.
What you get—and what you do not
A published source tarball is a snapshot of a kernel source tree. It is appropriate when you want to read, inspect, or build one particular release and do not need to track its development in Git. It does not provide the commit history, refs, or branch navigation of a repository.
That distinction is important: downloading a tarball avoids a repository, but it also means you cannot use Git to inspect the snapshot’s history or fetch subsequent changes from that directory. Select another versioned archive when you need a different release.
Choose between a tarball, a clone, and a bundle
| Method | What it provides | Best fit | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kernel source tarball | Compressed snapshot of a source tree | Reading, building, or inspecting a particular release without Git | No repository history or Git refs; choose the version deliberately. |
git clone |
A Git repository with remote-tracking branches and an initial checkout | Development, history inspection, branch work, or future fetches | Retains repository data; shallow or filtered options change what is initially available. |
| Git bundle | Git objects and refs in a file | Offline transfer or seeding of repository data | It is not a plain source archive, and Git does not support pushing into a bundle. |
Git’s archive command can create an archive from a named tree, but that general Git feature should not be confused with the kernel’s published release tarballs. Git documents timestamp behavior that depends on whether the archive is made from a tree ID or a commit or tag ID; that detail does not establish how any particular kernel.org archive was produced.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When a smaller Git download is still useful
If you do want repository features but want to limit the initial transfer, Git offers shallow and partial clones. These options still create a repository; they are alternatives to a full-history clone, not replacements for a source tarball.
git clone --depth <n>truncates history to the specified commit depth. It implies--single-branchunless you override that behavior.git clone --filter=blob:noneuses partial-clone filtering to defer file contents until Git needs them.
Consult the git clone documentation for the current options and their effects. Choose a shallow or filtered clone when future fetches, refs, or Git history matter; choose a tarball when you only need a source snapshot.

What a Git bundle is for
A bundle is useful when repository data must move without a live server connection. Git’s bundle documentation describes bundles as a way to transfer Git objects offline; they can be used to clone or fetch. A bundle preserves repository data rather than presenting only an extracted source tree, and you cannot push into the bundle itself.

The archive index lists detached signature files alongside some source archives. Their presence alone does not explain how to verify a download or which key to trust. Follow the current kernel.org signature-verification guidance rather than assuming a verification command or key procedure.

Archive contents and release status are live information. For example, the v6.x archive index listed linux-6.18.55.tar.xz at 148M on 3 October 2026; that is a dated listing observation from The Linux Kernel Archives, not a lasting size or a recommendation. The release page also identified mainline 7.3-rc5 dated 27 September 2026. Release candidates are pre-releases aimed mostly at kernel developers and Linux enthusiasts, so readers seeking a normal release should check the live release information and choose a stable version.
