The published example connects the display over SPI, reads joystick axes on analog inputs A00 and A01, and redraws the game after processing input. Its implementation is documented by Electromaker; use Wilderness Labs’ current F7 setup guide for board and development-environment setup. The code and wiring have not been independently rebuilt or verified against current Meadow tooling.
Parts and wiring
The published build uses these components:
- Meadow F7 Micro development board
- MAX7219 LED dot-matrix display module
- Two-axis analog joystick
Follow the circuit diagram on the Electromaker project page for the physical connections. The available page text does not expose enough diagram detail to validate every wire, so do not treat the code’s pin names as a complete wiring map. In the sample, D01 is the MAX7219 chip-select pin, while A00 and A01 read the joystick axes. Check those assignments against your specific F7 board and module before connecting power.
The sample sets the MAX7219 driver’s deviceCount to 4. Confirm that the display module you use has the matching arrangement; the source does not establish a universally compatible module or provide verified substitutes.
Set up Meadow and the project
The original Electromaker tutorial describes creating a Meadow Application in Visual Studio 2019 and installing Meadow.Foundation.Displays.GraphicsLibrary and Meadow.Foundation.Displays.Max7219. Treat those as the tutorial’s original directions, not as current tooling requirements: package versions and compatibility with today’s SDK were not established.

For current F7 setup, follow Wilderness Labs’ Hello, Meadow F7 Feather guide. It covers .NET, Visual Studio 2022 or VS Code, Meadow templates and extensions, deploying Meadow.OS with Meadow.CLI, creating an F7 project, and deploying an application to a connected board. The modern setup route does not itself verify that the older game code or its package references compile unchanged.
How the sample is put together
Initialize the display and controls
The sample creates an SPI-connected MAX7219 display using D01 for chip select, then creates a GraphicsLibrary, selects Font4x8, and rotates the graphics orientation by 180 degrees. It reads joystick position using analog pins A00 and A01. The orientation setting affects how output is presented; check the result with your module’s physical orientation.

Keep game state separate from drawing
The game logic is represented by TetrisGame(8, 24), separate from the hardware rendering and input code. The dimensions passed to the constructor define the sample’s game field; the display is handled by the graphics library rather than by that state object.
DrawTetrisField renders the lines-cleared count, checks the current piece’s 4-by-4 shape positions, and then traverses the game field to paint occupied cells. The drawing is offset vertically to leave a line for the counter. Each pass clears the graphics surface, draws the field, and calls graphics.Show() to present it.

Read input, advance the piece, and redraw
The main loop obtains joystick position with joystick.GetPosition() and maps directional positions to game methods. In the published controls, left and right move the piece horizontally, up moves it downward, and down rotates it. The direction-to-action mapping is worth noting because it may differ from familiar keyboard Tetris controls.
Automatic falling is based on the sample’s level-dependent expression tick % (21 - game.Level). The code also waits 500 milliseconds after a rotation action. These are implementation details of the published example, not recommended timing values or a tested difficulty curve. The loop clears and redraws the display, then pauses 50 milliseconds.

What to check if the project does not behave as expected
- No display output: Recheck the physical wiring against the Electromaker diagram, especially SPI connections and the D01 chip-select assignment. Confirm that the module arrangement matches the driver configuration.
- Joystick movement is wrong or absent: Verify the board’s analog inputs and the joystick axis connections against the sample’s A00/A01 assignments. Do not assume pin labels or wiring are interchangeable across boards.
- Code does not build: The original tutorial’s Visual Studio 2019 and NuGet directions are historical, and current package versions or compatibility are not established. Use the official F7 guide for supported current setup steps, then check the Meadow documentation and sample repository for applicable API context: Meadow Guides and WildernessLabs/Meadow.Samples.
The source documents one concrete F7/MAX7219/analog-joystick implementation. Other boards, displays, or input devices should be evaluated for Meadow support, driver availability, pin requirements, display resolution, and wiring; the cited project does not validate alternatives.
