MiroTalk SFU is a self-hosted platform for group video meetings, classes and webinars, built on WebRTC and mediasoup. It lets an organization run meetings on infrastructure it controls, but it is not a turnkey service: the operator must configure the server, domain, media networking, HTTPS and ongoing maintenance. If you want MiroTalk without those responsibilities, MiroTalk Cloud is the managed alternative.
What MiroTalk SFU does
MiroTalk SFU routes participant audio and video through a Selective Forwarding Unit (SFU) rather than having every participant send media directly to every other participant. The official documentation identifies mediasoup as its underlying SFU technology. This architecture can support larger group calls than a peer-to-peer mesh, although actual capacity depends on the meeting workload and server conditions.
Documented capabilities include webcam video, screen sharing, recording, chat, file sharing, a REST API, integrations and RTMP streaming. Features and configuration can change between releases, so consult the current MiroTalk documentation for implementation details.
What you need to self-host it
MiroTalk’s self-hosting guide lists Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, Node.js LTS and npm, and a domain or subdomain whose DNS points to the server. FFmpeg is needed for optional RTMP streaming. The guide discusses automated installation, Node.js with PM2, and Docker as deployment approaches; it also names Hetzner, Netcup, Hostinger and Contabo as server-provider options.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is a versioning detail worth checking before installation: the self-hosting guide recommends Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, while the repository describes a Node 22.x tested setup and includes an Ubuntu 24.04 example. These are not a single universal set of requirements. Check the current self-hosting guide and repository for the versions supported by the release you plan to deploy.
Deployment choices and network setup
Choose a deployment method
The documented options include automated installation, running the Node.js application under PM2, and Docker. Docker packages an application environment; it does not by itself provide a reachable, production-ready WebRTC service. You still need to configure the project and environment settings, including the server’s announced public IP where required.

Open and secure the service
The Docker Hub listing gives TCP port 3010 and TCP/UDP ports 40000–40100 as example inbound firewall rules. Treat these as deployment examples, not a substitute for checking the port configuration of your chosen release. The application and media ports must be reachable through the server’s firewall and any cloud-network firewall for participants to connect reliably.
For production, MiroTalk’s deployment guidance calls for HTTPS and shows Nginx and Certbot setup. A public hostname, valid TLS configuration, reachable media ports and restricted administration are all part of operating the service. Review the Docker Hub listing alongside the installation guide for the configuration relevant to your deployment.

How much server capacity does it need?
MiroTalk’s self-hosting documentation gives a rough estimate of about 100 participants per worker, depending on video quality, bandwidth and system load; the documentation’s publication year is not stated. This is a vendor estimate, not a benchmark or guaranteed limit. MiroTalk’s SFU documentation puts the caution plainly: “Capacity figures require testing.”
Participant count alone is not enough to size a server. Resource demand can change with the number of active cameras, selected video quality and frame rate, browser mix, concurrent rooms, outbound bandwidth, recording, AI features, RTMP output and TURN traffic. Network quality can also affect the experience.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Test a representative workload
Before relying on a deployment for regular meetings, test it with a workload resembling actual use. Include the expected number of concurrent participants and rooms, active cameras, video settings and any recording, AI, RTMP or TURN features you intend to use. Measure server load and network behavior during the test; use those results to adjust capacity rather than treating the per-worker estimate as a sizing rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security, privacy and the SFU trust boundary
MiroTalk’s documentation says WebRTC media transport between each participant and the SFU is protected with DTLS-SRTP. The SFU still processes routing information and sits inside the media trust boundary. Self-hosting gives the operator control of the infrastructure, but it does not mean the server is outside that boundary or eliminate the need to trust and secure it.

The operator is responsible for production configuration: use HTTPS, restrict administrative access, maintain dependencies and apply firewall rules appropriate to the deployment. The self-hosted label alone does not establish that an installation is secure.
License and the managed alternative
AGPLv3 and alternative licensing
The MiroTalk SFU repository identifies AGPLv3 as the project license and links to an alternative license for purchase. If you plan to modify or redistribute the software, or use it in an organizational setting with specific licensing requirements, review the current repository license and official commercial terms. This article is not a legal interpretation.
MiroTalk Cloud
MiroTalk describes its Cloud offering as a managed service powered by MiroTalk WEB. Its documentation says the service handles deployment, updates, monitoring, scaling, backups and maintenance. It is the more relevant route if you want to use MiroTalk but do not want to operate a VPS, Docker or Node.js application, SSL and WebRTC networking yourself. Check the provider’s current service terms before choosing it.
Quick Recap
Is MiroTalk SFU right for your organization?
- Consider self-hosting if you want to run meetings on infrastructure you control and can take responsibility for installation, capacity testing, security and maintenance.
- Consider MiroTalk Cloud if avoiding infrastructure operations matters more than running the service on your own server.
- Plan before deployment by estimating concurrent participants, active cameras, video settings, bandwidth and optional workloads such as recording or RTMP, then validating those assumptions with a test.
