To reduce unwanted personalization, review Settings > Personalization > Memory and your Custom Instructions. For one conversation that does not use personalization, start a Temporary Chat and choose Unpersonalized before sending your first message. To address repetition in the current exchange, ask for a direct answer that avoids earlier points and uses a fresh structure. These steps can help, but they do not guarantee that every answer will be different.
Choose the control that matches the problem

Turn off or review remembered context
Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account and the current interface, you may see controls such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. Turn off the relevant available controls if you do not want ChatGPT to draw on that context. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT help page describes the feature and its controls.
Turning Memory off is not the same as deleting conversations. If you want a detail removed from future personalization, check where it may still exist: saved memories, chat history, files, or connected apps. Deleting a chat alone may not remove a separate saved memory. Also, if you turn Memory back on, ChatGPT may be able to create new memories from chats that remain in your history.
Edit Custom Instructions that keep steering replies
Memory and Custom Instructions do different jobs. Memory can supply context from prior interactions; Custom Instructions are preferences you have directly given ChatGPT about what it should know or how it should respond. If answers repeatedly use the same tone, format, or assumptions, check the instructions first.

- Web or desktop: Settings > Personalization > Custom Instructions.
- iOS or Android: Settings > Customize ChatGPT.
Edit the instruction that no longer fits, or disable customization if you do not want those preferences applied. Changes affect future conversations. OpenAI documents these options in its ChatGPT Custom Instructions guidance.
Start one conversation without personalization
- Start a new chat and choose Temporary.
- Before sending the first message, select Unpersonalized.
- Send your request. The choice cannot be changed after the conversation begins.
OpenAI defines Unpersonalized as not using memory, custom instructions, or plugins. Temporary Chat is not automatically unpersonalized: the setup lets you choose Personalized or Unpersonalized. A Temporary Chat does not appear in history and is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary, but OpenAI says it may retain a safety copy for up to 30 days. Saving the conversation converts it to a regular chat subject to your account settings; if Memory is on, the saved conversation may then be used for personalization. Ask for a fresh answer in the current chat
For repetition within an exchange, make the instruction concrete and local to the task. For example:
Answer this question directly. Avoid repeating points from earlier replies. Use a fresh structure, and do not use personal details unless they are needed to answer.

You can also specify what would make the answer useful—such as “give me the three new points only” or “use a short checklist instead of another overview.” This is prompt-writing advice, not an official setting or a promise that the model will never repeat itself. If the pattern continues, start a fresh chat and review the personalization sources that may be influencing replies.
Trace an unwanted personal detail to its source
When a response shows a Sources section, review it for context that may have contributed, such as a memory, past chat, custom instruction, file, or connected email. Sources may not show every factor. Correct or remove the detail at the source where it appears; if the interface offers a control to ask ChatGPT not to mention it again, you can use that too. Deleting only the chat is not necessarily enough if the same information is saved elsewhere.

When a setting is missing
Available controls and labels can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. A managed workspace may restrict what you can change; OpenAI advises contacting the workspace administrator when a setting is unavailable. The documented controls address personalization, but OpenAI does not claim they eliminate repetitive answers.
