Firefox 118, released September 26, 2023, addressed six vulnerabilities that Mozilla classified as high impact, alongside moderate- and low-impact issues. The fixes covered memory-safety and process-boundary risks. Mozilla then issued a separate critical security update, Firefox 118.0.1, two days later; the critical flaw it fixed was not part of Firefox 118’s original advisory.
What Firefox 118 fixed
Mozilla’s MFSA 2023-41, published September 26, 2023, lists six entries as high impact: CVE-2023-5168, CVE-2023-5169, CVE-2023-5170, CVE-2023-5171, CVE-2023-5172, and CVE-2023-5176. Six is the number of entries Mozilla labels high in this advisory; it does not mean the vulnerabilities had identical severity details or exploitability.
The advisory describes several kinds of risk:
- An out-of-bounds write in Windows graphics code. CVE-2023-5168 is specifically listed as affecting Firefox on Windows.
- An out-of-bounds write in PathOps.
- A canvas-rendering condition that could expose memory from a privileged process.
- Use-after-free and memory-corruption conditions in the Ion engine.
- A group of memory-safety bugs. Mozilla said some showed evidence of memory corruption and presumed that, with enough effort, some could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. That is a qualified assessment of potential exploitability—not a report that those bugs were known to have been exploited.
MFSA 2023-41 also includes moderate- and low-impact issues. Mozilla describes moderate issues as vulnerabilities that would otherwise be high or critical but depend on uncommon, non-default configurations or complicated or unlikely steps. Its high-impact category covers flaws that can gather sensitive data from sites in other windows or inject data or code into those sites, requiring no more than normal browsing actions. See Mozilla’s Firefox security advisories and impact definitions.
The critical Firefox 118.0.1 follow-up
On September 28, 2023, Mozilla published a separate advisory, MFSA 2023-44, for Firefox 118.0.1. It addressed CVE-2023-5217, a critical heap-buffer-overflow in libvpx involving attacker-controlled VP8 media. Mozilla said it was aware of the issue being exploited in other products; the advisory does not say that Firefox users were known to have been targeted.

This critical libvpx vulnerability was a follow-up fix, not one of the six high-impact entries in Firefox 118’s September 26 advisory. Keeping the releases and advisories distinct matters when describing what each update fixed.
What Firefox users should do now
Firefox 118 is a historical release, not a suitable present-day security version. Install and use a current supported Firefox release, and follow Mozilla’s current update guidance. Mozilla’s security index now lists releases well beyond version 118, including Firefox 157 at the time reflected in the available information; the important practical point is to update to the current supported version rather than seek out 118 or 118.0.1.
