Start with Go’s official Get started with Go tutorial. It walks through installing Go, creating a module, writing and running a small program, and adding a package from an external module. It is a useful first step—not a course that teaches programming from scratch.
What you need before you start
The official tutorial says some programming experience helps, particularly familiarity with functions. You will also need a text editor and a command terminal. If you have never programmed before, expect to learn basic programming concepts alongside Go rather than treating the tutorial as a prerequisite-free introduction.
Install Go by following the current instructions for your operating system on the official Download and install page. The page organizes instructions by operating system; use its live directions rather than copying an old version-specific command. After installation, open a terminal and check that Go is available:
go versionThe command should print the installed Go version. If your terminal says the command cannot be found, revisit the installation steps for your operating system and confirm that Go is configured as instructed there.

Make and run your first Go program
The official tutorial begins inside a module, Go’s unit for organizing a project and its dependencies. Follow its sequence:
- Create a project directory. Make a new folder for the program, then open a terminal in that folder.
- Initialize a module. Run
go mod initfollowed by a module path, as shown in the tutorial. The path identifies the module; the tutorial’s example is for learning and should not automatically be treated as the namespace for a production project. - Write the program. Create a Go source file with a
mainpackage and the tutorial’s Hello World example. - Run it. From the project directory, execute
go run .. The dot tells Go to run the package in the current directory.
The module setup creates a go.mod file, which records the module and the dependencies described in the tutorial. The tutorial then extends the small program by importing a package from an external module, giving you an introduction to how Go projects use code beyond their own files.

After the first program, choose a resource by the way you prefer to learn and the task you want to tackle:

A sensible beginner route
- Complete the official getting-started tutorial and make sure you can run the program from its module directory.
- Use A Tour of Go to work through language concepts and exercises at your own pace.
- Pick a focused tutorial that matches what you want to build—for example, JSON handling, a database-backed program, or a REST service.
- Keep experimenting: change an example, run it, and use the resulting errors or output to guide what you investigate next.
