Yes, in a limited technical sense: a higher polling rate makes a mouse send movement reports more often, so the computer can receive more up-to-date position data. It does not guarantee better aim, more wins, or a difference every player will notice. Whether it helps depends on your PC, game, display, mouse, connection, and preference.
What polling rate measures
Polling rate is how often a mouse reports position or button data to the computer, measured in hertz (Hz). A 1,000Hz setting sends up to 1,000 reports per second; 4,000Hz sends up to 4,000, and 8,000Hz up to 8,000, according to Razer’s HyperPolling explanation.

These are intervals between mouse reports, not total input latency. Sensor and switch behavior, firmware, the connection, operating system, game processing, frame rendering, and display response all contribute to the time between moving the mouse and seeing the result. Razer’s 2021 announcement of its Viper 8K Hz likewise describes the 1ms and 0.125ms figures as polling intervals.
What a higher rate can change in play
More frequent reports can give a game newer position information between frames. Razer says that can make cursor movement appear smoother, particularly with a high-refresh-rate monitor. This is a plausible technical benefit, but the vendor’s explanation is not evidence that every player will aim better or win more often.

One product-specific example comes from TechRadar’s 2026 review of the SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2: its reviewer described cursor movement at 4,000Hz as noticeably smoother while playing Apex Legends. Using mousetester.io, the reviewer observed 3,106Hz with the mouse set to 4,000Hz at 3,250 DPI. That is one reviewer’s observation and measurement on one mouse, not a general study of gaming performance.
The available evidence does not establish a universal improvement in aim accuracy, competitive results, or player performance. A shorter report interval is measurable; whether its effect matters to you is setup- and preference-dependent.

Tradeoffs to check before enabling a high rate
CPU use and stability
Corsair says higher polling rates increase CPU use, since a mouse can send tracking information continuously while moving. Its support guidance, updated September 4, 2025, recommends at least an Intel Core i5 9th generation or AMD Ryzen 5 2nd generation (or equivalent) for 4,000Hz, and an Intel Core i7 9th generation or AMD Ryzen 7 2nd generation (or equivalent) for 8,000Hz. These are Corsair recommendations, not universal minimum requirements or a guarantee that a particular game will run smoothly.
Some combinations of PC, game, mouse, and USB setup can stutter or have compatibility problems at high rates. Corsair recommends connecting directly to a USB port linked to the motherboard chipset; hubs, docks, and third-party chipsets may be less stable. If a higher setting coincides with stutter or frame-time problems, lower the polling rate and see whether smoothness returns.

Wireless battery life
High polling can reduce battery life. TechRadar’s Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2 review reports SteelSeries rates that mouse for up to 200 hours over Bluetooth and 120 hours over 2.4GHz at 1,000Hz with RGB off. The reviewer estimates around 30 hours at 4,000Hz; that high-rate figure is an estimate, not a SteelSeries rating. The numbers are specific to that mouse and the stated conditions, so do not assume they apply to other wireless models.
Connection and configuration
High-rate modes may need to be enabled in the mouse’s software rather than being on by default. In its Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2 review, TechRadar says 4,000Hz must be enabled in SteelSeries GG. The review describes the mouse as supporting 2.4GHz wireless and Bluetooth and recommends 2.4GHz for gaming on the basis of lower latency and a more stable connection. Check your own mouse’s software, firmware, connection mode, and battery guidance before changing settings.

How to decide which polling rate to use
- Start with your current setting. Confirm the rate in the mouse’s software and note your connection type. Do not assume the mouse is using its advertised maximum.
- Try one higher setting at a time. Test it in the game you actually play, using the same connection and other settings. This helps you notice whether the change feels smoother without confusing it with other adjustments.
- Watch for problems as well as feel. If you encounter stutter, compatibility issues, or unwanted battery drain, step the rate down. The highest available number is not automatically the best everyday setting.
- Keep the higher rate only if it suits your setup. If the game remains smooth and you prefer the feel, use it. If you cannot tell a difference, or the tradeoffs outweigh it, a lower rate is reasonable.
Should you buy a mouse for its polling rate?
Polling rate is one specification, not a measure of the whole mouse. Before buying, compare shape and weight, sensor, buttons, wired or wireless connection, battery life, price, and compatibility with your PC and games. A mouse advertising 4,000Hz or 8,000Hz may offer an option to experiment with, but the number alone does not establish better performance for you.
For context, Razer introduced the Viper 8K Hz as an 8,000Hz model in 2021, while TechRadar’s review documents the SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless Gen 2 as a configurable 4,000Hz option. These are examples of mice with high polling modes, not blanket purchase recommendations; check current product variants and availability before choosing one.
