Buying games is usually the more dependable long-term choice if you replay a small, known set of titles. Game Pass may cost less if you play enough games included in the right plan during the months you pay for it. The fair comparison is the subscription’s total cost over that period versus the current prices of the games you actually replay—not the size of the catalog.
How to compare the cost fairly
Use the same replay list and the same time period on both sides. A subscription charge buys access while you remain subscribed and each game remains eligible; buying a game is the alternative for continued access to that purchased title, subject to its purchase and license terms.
- List your replay games and platform. A console, PC, or other platform can affect which plan and titles apply.
- Check each game’s current availability. Confirm that it is included in the specific plan and region you would use. Catalog membership varies by time, region, plan, and platform; check the Xbox Game Pass catalog.
- Count every paid month you expect to keep access. Use the plan’s regular price for recurring months, not just a promotional introductory price. Subscriptions renew unless canceled.
- Add the current purchase prices of those same games. Include a sale or member discount only if it is available to you and applies to that purchase.
- Count other included games and benefits only if you would use them. An expansive catalog is not savings if you would not play its games.
Subscription total = monthly plan price × paid months. Compare that total with the summed current purchase prices of the replay games. This calculation measures the cost over your chosen period; it does not make subscription access equivalent to permanent ownership.
US plan prices and what changes the comparison
The Xbox US plan listing showed the following prices and catalog figures when checked on October 4, 2026. They are displayed US prices, not a guarantee of what you will pay: taxes, region, offer eligibility, and later price changes can affect your bill.

Plan features, games, and availability vary. Check the Xbox plan comparison and confirm that the plan includes the games and platform you need. The overview says offers may be limited and subscriptions continue at the then-current regular rate unless canceled.
When buying is more likely to cost less
- You mainly replay a few specific games, and their combined purchase price is below the subscription total for the months you would keep paying.
- You want continued access to those titles without depending on an active subscription or their remaining in the catalog.
- You would not use enough of the plan’s other included games or benefits to make their value meaningful to you.
Compare prices for your actual games at the time you plan to buy. A sale can change the result, but only count a discounted price if it is currently available to you.

When Game Pass may be cheaper
- The games you want are included in a plan that works on your platform and in your region.
- You expect to play enough included games during the paid months to justify the recurring total.
- Benefits or other catalog games have real value to you, rather than being counted simply because they are available.
If a game is about to leave the library, the Xbox catalog page may show a member purchase discount. It displayed “save up to 20%” for such purchases when checked, but that is conditional—not a discount on every game. Check the title’s current listing and applicable discount before including it in your calculation.

Xbox says Game Pass access lasts until the subscription is canceled or expires, or the game leaves the library. A game’s presence today does not guarantee it will remain available for every future replay. The Xbox subscription overview also says automatic renewal is on by default. A promotional price can roll into the then-current regular price, so count all expected paid months and cancel if you do not want the subscription to renew.

Xbox describes a narrow, one-time refund possibility for an unwanted recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days. That is not a general cancellation or refund guarantee.

Write down the plan, monthly price, number of paid months, and current purchase price for each replay game. Then ask whether you will use other included games or benefits. If the subscription total is higher than buying the replay list—and the extra catalog does not make up the difference for you—buying fits your use better. If you would play several included games during those months and accept that access can end, the subscription may be the lower-cost option.
