A wireless access point (AP) typically connects to your network over Ethernet and creates Wi-Fi nearby. A Wi-Fi range extender typically connects to your router over Wi-Fi and rebroadcasts that signal. If you can run Ethernet to the weak-coverage area, start with a wired AP; if you cannot, an extender may help when placed where it still receives a usable signal. Some extenders also offer a wired AP mode, so check the exact model.

How an extender and an access point connect

Access point: Ethernet backhaul

A conventional AP links wireless devices to the wired local network. It usually connects to the router or a network switch by Ethernet, then provides Wi-Fi to devices in its coverage area. The Ethernet run may be direct or go through a switch, depending on your network and equipment. Some APs use Power over Ethernet (PoE), which carries power over the network cable; verify whether the AP needs a compatible PoE switch or injector.

Extender: wireless backhaul

A conventional Wi-Fi extender receives the router’s wireless signal and rebroadcasts it to reach farther. Because the extender depends on a wireless connection back to the router, its own placement and the quality of that incoming signal matter.

Which should you choose?

Situation Starting point What to consider
Ethernet reaches the weak-coverage area Wired access point Check power requirements, including PoE, mounting, wired port speed, and whether it is managed standalone or through a controller.
No Ethernet, but the router signal reaches an intermediate location Wi-Fi range extender Place it where it can still receive a usable router signal, then check coverage in the target area.
Several rooms or floors need coordinated coverage Compare mesh with multiple APs Mesh systems can use wired or wireless backhaul and coordinate coverage, but capabilities and setup vary by equipment.
You already own an extender with an Ethernet port Check whether it supports Access Point mode Follow the instructions for the exact model; an Ethernet port alone does not establish that AP mode is supported.

The practical choice is mainly about the connection back to your network. A wired AP does not rely on a wireless hop for its upstream connection. NETGEAR describes a wired AP connection as stable and able to transfer data in both directions at once; its support page also says wireless setup halves bandwidth. Treat the latter as NETGEAR’s generalization, not a guaranteed result for every model or network layout. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal speed ranking across all APs and extenders.

How to place a Wi-Fi extender

Start around halfway between the router and the weak area, as TP-Link recommends, then adjust based on the signal and coverage you actually get. “Halfway” is a starting point, not a measurement that works in every home: walls, metal objects, and other obstacles can affect reception.

  1. Choose an intermediate outlet or location between the router and the area with poor Wi-Fi.
  2. Check whether the extender receives a usable connection from the router at that spot.
  3. Test Wi-Fi in the target area and move the extender if needed. Moving it deeper into the dead zone may improve reach toward that area but can leave the extender with a weaker connection to the router.

Why product names can be misleading

“Extender” and “access point” describe common roles, not every mode a product can use. For example, the TP-Link RE505X manual documents both Repeater and Access Point modes. In AP mode, it turns an existing wired network into a wireless network; in Repeater mode, it extends wireless coverage by repeating the signal. That example applies to the RE505X, not automatically to every extender.

Some managed AP products may also support wireless repeating or mesh-node functions. Check the model’s manual for its available modes and identify how it will connect back to the network. The backhaul method—not just the label on the box—determines whether the device is using Ethernet or Wi-Fi for that connection.

What to compare before buying

  • Backhaul: Confirm whether the device will connect to your network by Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or either method.
  • Wi-Fi capabilities: Compare the Wi-Fi standard and supported bands with your router and devices.
  • Wired ports: Check the port speed and whether the product supports the wired mode you need.
  • Power: Verify whether it uses a power adapter or PoE, and whether any required injector or switch is compatible.
  • Setup and management: Check whether it works standalone or needs a controller, and whether it is compatible with your existing router or mesh system.

For model-specific instructions, consult the TP-Link RE505X manual, Chapter 6: Use Your Extender as an Access Point. For placement guidance, see TP-Link’s guide to placing a range extender. NETGEAR’s explanation of wired and wireless AP connections is available in its wired versus wireless access point setup guidance. For the distinction among APs, extenders, and mesh equipment, see the TP-Link Omada guide to networking terms.
