Set a personal funding ceiling before depositing, then use any app controls available to enforce it. Treat that ceiling as a limit on deposits—not a guarantee against losses: money already in the account can still be lost on open event contracts. Check each contract’s possible loss, fees, settlement rules and exit conditions, and use only money left after living expenses and savings needs.

Choose a ceiling you can afford before funding

Start with your budget, not the amount an app lets you deposit. Account for ordinary expenses, debt obligations, emergency savings and planned savings. Only money remaining after those commitments could be considered risk capital. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) advises event-contract customers to use only risk capital after living expenses and other savings needs are met. CFTC: Understanding Prediction Markets and Event Contracts.

Decide on a monthly deposit ceiling in advance. A practical way to test it is to ask whether losing the entire amount you deposit would affect bills or savings goals; if so, lower it or do not fund the account. There is no universal dollar amount appropriate for everyone. You can record your ceiling and deposits in a paper budget, but a record does not enforce an app setting or limit trading losses.

What a deposit limit does—and does not—control

Kalshi describes its deposit-limit tool as a way to set a maximum monthly deposit amount. That is a funding control within the scope of that platform feature, not a cap on how much you can lose on contracts funded earlier. It does not make event-contract trading safe or guarantee that your balance will be preserved. See Kalshi’s responsible trading tools.

Before entering a contract, review how the event is defined, how settlement is determined, what the payout is, and what commissions or other fees apply. The CFTC says customers should receive clear information about contract terms, costs and settlement. It also notes that an open position may sometimes be exited at the prevailing market price before settlement; that price can differ from what you paid, and an exit at your desired price is not guaranteed. Read the CFTC’s event-contract guidance.

  • Possible loss: Know the amount at risk for the specific contract, rather than treating your deposit ceiling as your loss ceiling.
  • Price and liquidity: Check bid and ask prices and whether there appears to be a reasonable way to exit. A market price can move, and an exit may not be available at a favorable price.
  • Settlement: Read the contract’s exact event wording and settlement process; everyday assumptions about an event may not match the contract definition.
  • Costs: Include commissions and fees when considering the economics of a position.

Set a separate limit for each position

A monthly funding cap and a position-level decision answer different questions. The cap sets how much new money you intend to put into an account; a per-event or per-contract limit sets how much you are personally willing to risk on one position. Choosing a separate maximum at risk per event is a planning habit, not a CFTC-prescribed formula or a guarantee of reduced losses.

Decide that amount before entering. Avoid adding more simply because a market moves against you: doing so changes the amount at risk and can undermine the boundary you set. Monitor open positions and account for the possibility that a position cannot be closed at a favorable price. The CFTC’s guidance advises customers to monitor positions, understand costs and review contract-specific rules.

Use a pause or self-exclusion with open positions in mind

Before activating an exclusion, check what happens to existing positions. Kalshi says users cannot sell open positions during its exclusion period, so close any positions you do not want to continue holding before the exclusion begins. Kalshi also offers access to SelfExclude.io for broader exclusion across participating prediction-market platforms; its own exclusion does not prevent access through a Futures Commission Merchant. Details are in Kalshi’s responsible-trading tools.

Robinhood’s self-exclusion is a formal account-level opt-out, not the sports-market display setting. Use its opt-out instructions to understand the support process.

Respect event-contract rules and information boundaries

Event contracts are derivatives tied to event outcomes. Prices reflect market activity and can move; contract rules, fees and settlement determine what a position pays. The CFTC’s consumer guidance says, “All speculation involves risk.” Its advice includes understanding risks and costs, reviewing the rules for each contract and monitoring open positions. CFTC guidance on prediction markets and event contracts.

Do not trade when you have confidential information about an event or influence over its outcome, and read the platform’s rules. In a February 25, 2026 advisory, the CFTC described enforcement matters involving a trader apparently trading on their own candidacy and another trader with likely advance access to unpublished YouTube-channel content. The reported penalties and suspensions were enforcement outcomes in those cases, not typical customer losses. CFTC: Prediction Markets Advisory, February 25, 2026.
