To set up a proxy, first get the exact server address and port—or the automatic configuration (PAC) or setup-script URL—from your provider or network administrator. Then enter it in the proxy settings for the relevant network or connection. The steps differ by device, and a system proxy does not guarantee that every app will use it.
Before you change proxy settings
Ask whoever supplied the proxy which setup method to use and obtain the required details. Depending on the method, you may need a hostname or IP address, port, username and password, PAC or setup-script URL, and any domains or addresses that should bypass the proxy. Do not guess an address, port, or URL.
If your work or school manages the device, check with IT before changing its network settings. The script, server, and exceptions may be specific to your organization.
Choose the right setup method
| Method | What you need | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic detection | No address to enter; the network must support discovery. | Use it when your network administrator says the network configures proxy settings automatically. |
| Setup script or PAC | The exact script or PAC URL. | Use it when your administrator or provider gives you a configuration URL. It supplies proxy rules rather than asking you to enter one server for every destination. |
| Manual configuration | Proxy server name or IP address and port; credentials and exceptions if required. | Use it when you are given a specific proxy endpoint and its settings. |
Not every device offers every method in the same place. On Windows and Mac, proxy configuration is available in system network settings; on iPhone and Android, the cited consumer instructions concern Wi-Fi network settings.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Set up a proxy on Windows 10 or Windows 11
Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy, then choose the method provided for your network. See Microsoft’s Windows proxy instructions.
Automatic detection
Under automatic proxy setup, turn on Automatically detect settings if your network supports it. This option does not replace a setup URL or manual endpoint when your administrator has specifically supplied one.

- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Setup script
- Under automatic proxy setup, select Use setup script > Set up.
- Turn on the option, enter the script address supplied by your administrator or provider, and save.
Manual proxy
- Under Manual proxy setup, select Use a proxy server > Set up.
- Enter the supplied server name or IP address and port.
- Add any required exceptions. Choose whether to bypass the proxy for local intranet addresses; Microsoft recommends bypassing them unless your organization requires them to use the proxy.
- Save the settings.
If the proxy is for a VPN connection, configure it separately in that VPN connection’s advanced proxy settings rather than assuming the general network proxy setting covers it. Microsoft’s guide explains Windows proxy setup and VPN-related settings.
Set up a proxy on macOS
In the macOS 26 guide, proxy controls are attached to a selected network service. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Network, select the network service in use, and choose Details > Proxies. The labels may change in later macOS releases. Apple’s steps are in Change proxy settings on Mac.

Android proxy settings are associated with Wi-Fi, but the exact menu path varies by phone manufacturer and software version. Open the settings or details for the connected Wi-Fi network and look for its proxy option. If the option is missing or the labels differ, follow the phone maker’s instructions; Google advises checking with the device manufacturer when an advanced network setting is not where expected. Google’s guidance is available in Manage advanced network settings on your Android phone.

On managed Android Enterprise devices, documented choices include None, Manual, and Automatic. Manual setup uses a server address and port, with an optional exclusion list; automatic setup uses a URL to a proxy configuration file. These documented enterprise options are not a universal step-by-step menu path for consumer Android phones. See Microsoft Intune’s Android Wi-Fi settings documentation.
Check what the proxy applies to
Proxy scope depends on the platform and connection: Windows provides network proxy settings and separate settings for a VPN connection; macOS applies the configuration to the selected network service; and the cited iPhone and Android consumer guidance is for Wi-Fi. Apps can also behave differently. Some may not obtain proxy settings from the operating system, and PAC support can depend on the app. If a browser works but another app does not, check that app’s own proxy settings or support information. Microsoft’s proxy configuration guidance explains that some Windows apps need their own configuration.
Troubleshoot a proxy that does not connect
- Confirm the hostname or IP address and port with the administrator or provider that supplied them.
- Check that you entered the complete, current PAC or setup-script URL if using automatic configuration.
- Verify required credentials, spelling, and any bypass or exclusion entries.
- Confirm that you changed the setting for the intended network, service, or VPN connection.
- If one app fails while another works, check whether the failing app supports the system proxy or needs an app-specific setting.
Repeatedly toggling a setting will not correct a wrong or expired endpoint; ask the source of the proxy to verify its current details.
Proxy and VPN are not the same
A proxy and a VPN are different connection tools, and a proxy setting should not be treated as a VPN. Microsoft describes a VPN connection as generally providing a more secure connection than a proxy server, while noting that they can appear similar. The appropriate choice depends on the service and your needs; that general comparison is not a guarantee about every product or threat model. See Microsoft’s proxy and VPN guidance.
