Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Short answer: A properly working VPN hides the contents of traffic inside its encrypted tunnel from your internet provider and local network, and websites generally see the VPN server’s IP address instead of your public IP. It does not make you anonymous. The VPN provider handles the tunneled traffic, websites can identify you through accounts and other signals, and employer monitoring may still see activity on a managed device.
What a VPN changes—and what it does not
A VPN app routes selected device traffic through a server operated by the VPN provider. When the tunnel is properly encrypted, your internet provider and the network you are using can generally tell that your device is connected to a VPN endpoint and observe connection details such as timing and data volume. They ordinarily cannot read the protected traffic contents or see the destinations carried inside the tunnel. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) cautions that not all VPN apps encrypt information, so protection depends on the particular app and how it handles traffic. FTC VPN guidance; Mozilla’s VPN explainer.
A VPN changes who you must trust: instead of relying only on your ISP or local network not to inspect your traffic, you also rely on the VPN provider. The FTC warns that some VPN apps may share data with third parties. Read the provider’s privacy policy, check app permissions, and look for credible independent information rather than treating privacy claims in advertising as proof.
What your internet provider can see
With a functioning, encrypted VPN tunnel, your ISP can generally see that your connection is communicating with a VPN server, along with connection timing and volume. It ordinarily cannot read the contents of traffic protected inside that tunnel or identify the destinations carried through it. If the VPN does not encrypt all traffic, or some apps or connections bypass the tunnel, those connections may remain visible to the ISP or local network.

Without a VPN, an ISP may have access to information such as browsing information, IP addresses, URLs, and location data, depending on the connection and provider practices. The FTC’s October 21, 2021 report examined the practices of six major ISPs; its findings describe those providers and should not be treated as a universal account of every ISP or current practice everywhere. FTC staff report on six major ISPs.
What websites can see
A website ordinarily receives the VPN server’s outward-facing IP address rather than your home or mobile public IP. That can obscure your network location from the site, but it does not conceal your identity if you sign in, provide identifying details in a form, or are recognized through cookies or other tracking. As the FTC puts it, “A VPN app generally isn’t going to make you entirely anonymous.” FTC VPN guidance; Mozilla’s VPN explainer.

HTTPS and a VPN protect different parts of a connection. HTTPS encrypts page contents in transit between your browser and a website, while a VPN creates an encrypted route from your device to the VPN server. HTTPS does not itself conceal every connection detail, such as destination IP information, and a VPN does not replace HTTPS. Mozilla’s explanation of VPNs.
What your employer can see
It depends on where monitoring happens. If an employer can observe only network traffic outside a properly working VPN tunnel, it may see a VPN connection rather than the destinations inside it. But a VPN is not a reliable way to defeat monitoring on an employer-managed device. Endpoint monitoring software, device controls, or other workplace configurations may provide visibility beyond what the network gateway can see. Mozilla notes that online actions can be visible to employers or schools; the exact visibility depends on the device, software, and network setup. Do not assume a personal VPN makes activity on a work device private from your employer. What is visible depends on the organization’s specific monitoring and device-management configuration.

- Coverage: Check which traffic and apps use the tunnel, and whether any connections bypass it.
- Encryption and DNS: Look for clear information about encryption and how the app handles DNS requests; a VPN’s protection is not guaranteed to cover every connection.
- Provider practices: Review what the service says it collects, retains, and shares, along with its app permissions and any independent information available.
- Remaining identifiers: Remember that website logins, submitted information, cookies, and other tracking can still connect activity to you.
- Device ownership: Treat a work-managed device as potentially monitored even when you use a personal VPN.
The FTC recommends researching VPN apps, reviewing their permissions, and reading their privacy policies. It also warns that not every VPN app encrypts information. FTC guidance for people considering a VPN app.
