Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a home router by its documented security-update lifetime and update process before comparing Wi-Fi speed or features. Confirm the exact model and hardware revision are supported, then check encryption compatibility, network controls, and whether the router will work with your internet provider. A fast router is not a durable security choice if its manufacturer stops issuing fixes.
Start by checking whether your current router still receives security updates
- Identify the exact device. Find the model and hardware revision on its label, in its manual, or in the router’s administration screen.
- Check the manufacturer’s official support pages. Look for firmware downloads, security advisories, and an end-of-life (EOL) or end-of-support listing for that exact model and revision.
- Decide whether replacement is necessary. If the router remains supported, receives updates, and meets your household’s needs, keep it updated. If support has ended, prioritize replacement. Age alone or a quiet update history does not prove that support has ended; confirm the manufacturer’s policy. The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) says router security updates are usually provided for a limited period of 3 to 5 years, varying by brand and model. It also says more than 12 months without a firmware or security patch makes EOL likely. Treat both figures as guidance for what to investigate, not as a universal lifespan or proof that a specific router is unsupported.
If the manufacturer does not make the support status clear, contact its support team and ask whether the exact revision still receives security fixes and when support is expected to end. NETGEAR’s support guidance and router replacement checklist also address when to replace a router; the details for your device depend on its manufacturer and internet provider.
Compare support policies before Wi-Fi generations
For each router you are considering, look for a stated minimum security-support period, an end date or a policy explaining how support can end, and a process for security advisories and fixes. A specific commitment is more useful than an undefined promise of “regular updates.” The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) says manufacturers should publish the minimum period for which a device will receive security updates and provide an end date or a support policy that defines notice before support ends. Its device update principles also call for manufacturers to identify third-party components whose update lifetimes may differ from the device’s.
Do not assume that a product line, brand, or Wi-Fi generation has one support lifetime. Check the policy for the exact model and hardware revision, and verify it again before buying because support information can change.
#1 Best Overall
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Check how updates are delivered and verified
- Prefer automatic updates or clear alerts. Automatic updates reduce the chance that available fixes are missed. The NCSC warns that without automatic updates, devices may remain unpatched even when an update is available. Automatic updating is helpful, but it does not extend a manufacturer’s support period.
- Confirm revision and regional coverage. Make sure the vendor offers firmware for the router’s precise hardware revision and region.
- Use official firmware only. The NCSC recommends that devices verify updates come from a trusted source and have not been altered in transit. Download firmware through the manufacturer’s official support channel; do not use unofficial download sites.
- Check the advisory process. Find out where the manufacturer publishes security notices and whether it explains how to install a fix if automatic updating is unavailable.
Choose encryption that works with your household’s devices
Look for WPA3 Personal, the newer option identified by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If older phones, printers, cameras, or smart-home devices cannot connect, WPA3 transition mode may help. The ACSC recommends trying transition mode for compatibility, with WPA2 as a fallback; FTC guidance recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. Avoid relying on WPA or WEP. If a router cannot support WPA2 at minimum, the ACSC advises considering replacement.
Before settling on a security mode, check the devices that need Wi-Fi access. A setting that is secure but leaves essential household equipment disconnected may require a transition mode or WPA2 fallback, if the router and devices support it.

Compare routers on the features that affect security and fit
| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Support lifecycle | Exact-model security-update minimum, expected end date or EOL status, and advisory process | Shows whether security fixes are expected during the period you plan to use the router. |
| Update delivery | Automatic updates or alerts, supported hardware revisions, and authenticated firmware | Helps you receive fixes for the correct device from a trusted source. |
| Encryption and compatibility | WPA3 Personal, transition mode, and WPA2 Personal fallback | Balances current security with the capabilities of your household devices. |
| Network controls | Guest network, built-in firewall, and options to turn off remote management, WPS, and UPnP | Provides practical ways to reduce exposure and separate visitor access. |
| Home and internet-service fit | Coverage, Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi features, setup options, and provider requirements | Helps ensure the router works in your space and with your service. |
| Included versus paid security | Which controls are built in and which require a recurring subscription | Prevents mistaking a paid feature for firmware maintenance or a longer support commitment. |
Choose coverage and capabilities for your actual home rather than assuming the newest Wi-Fi label will solve a coverage problem. A mesh kit may suit a home with multiple coverage areas, while one router may be enough for a smaller space. Check your provider’s requirements before replacing its equipment: compatibility depends on the provider and service, and a gateway or voice service may need to remain in place. NETGEAR’s replacement checklist explains why provider compatibility should be confirmed before purchase.

- Install current firmware. Use the manufacturer’s official update process for your hardware revision, then enable automatic updates or alerts if available.
- Replace default credentials. Set a unique administrator password and a unique Wi-Fi password. Avoid personal details in the network name.
- Choose the strongest compatible Wi-Fi security mode. Use WPA3 Personal where household devices support it; consider transition mode or WPA2 Personal if compatibility requires a fallback.
- Turn off remote management. Leave it off unless you have a specific need for access from outside your home.
- Review WPS and UPnP. Disable WPS and UPnP if you do not need them. Some smart devices or games may depend on UPnP, so check those needs before turning it off.
- Enable guest Wi-Fi and the router firewall. Use the guest network for visitors and leave the built-in firewall enabled.
These configuration steps follow the FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance and the ACSC’s router guidance.
