In Republic Book V, Plato has Socrates argue that women suited to be guardians should receive the same education and share the same work as male guardians. The proposal is limited to the guardian class in Plato’s ideal city—not a plan for every girl—and its purpose is civic service rather than an individual right to schooling. Modern views go further, treating gender equality in education as a question of rights, access, treatment, protection, learning and outcomes.
What did Plato think about girls’ education?
In Republic Book V, Socrates reasons that childbearing and begetting do not establish a difference relevant to the education needed for guardianship. Women with the aptitude for that role, he argues, should share the guardians’ education and pursuits. The dialogue states: “For the production of a guardian, then, education will not be one thing for our men and another for our women, especially since the nature which we hand over to it is the same.” (Republic, 456d, Perseus Digital Library translation.)

This is a proposal for the guardian class—the people assigned political and military responsibilities in the ideal city Plato constructs in the dialogue. It is not a claim that every girl in every society should receive identical schooling. Nor is it framed as a modern right to education: the argument asks how people should be prepared to perform roles in a just city.
The passage is striking because it assigns education and civic pursuits according to relevant aptitude rather than sex alone. But it also says women are physically weaker than men and proposes lighter duties for them. It therefore combines inclusion in guardian education with an assumption about women’s comparative physical capacity that does not amount to equality by contemporary standards.

How does the wider Platonic context affect the comparison?
The Laws also rejects separate education for men and women, according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy’s Summer 2026 entry. The entry notes scholarly disagreement about how that dialogue presents women’s capacities and political participation. Shared education is therefore not confined to one isolated sentence in the Republic, but Plato’s broader treatment of women should not be reduced to a simple claim that his views were fully egalitarian.

How do Plato’s proposal and modern views differ?
UNESCO defines gender equality in education this way: “the right to education of all learners – girls and boys, women and men – is respected equally.” Its framework also considers equal access to opportunities, resources and protections, as well as equal treatment and benefits. That shifts the focus from Plato’s question of who should be trained for a particular civic role to how equality is upheld throughout education and what it enables learners to do.
| Question | Plato’s proposal in Republic V | Contemporary equality framework |
|---|---|---|
| Who is included? | Women with the aptitude for guardian duties, within the ideal city. | All learners, including girls and boys, women and men. |
| Why provide or share education? | To prepare suitable people for service in the city’s guardian role. | To respect the right to education equally and ensure fair access, treatment and benefit. |
| What is education for? | Training for the political and military responsibilities of guardianship. | Participation in education, learning, and opportunities in life and work. |
| How is equality considered? | By whether sex alone should determine access to guardian education and pursuits, while the passage still assigns lighter duties to women. | Across participation, learning content and context, outcomes, protections, resources, and opportunities beyond school. |
What is the global situation concerning education and gender equality?
UNESCO and the UNESCO Institute for Statistics estimated that 273 million children and youth were out of school globally in 2024: 133 million girls and 140 million boys. This dated global figure shows that participation remains incomplete; it does not mean girls face identical barriers everywhere or at every school level.

UNESCO identifies barriers that vary with geography, income, disability, minority status, pregnancy, early marriage and gender-based violence. Participation is only one part of the picture: the modern framework also asks whether learners have safe and fair conditions, suitable resources, meaningful learning and comparable outcomes.

Equal participation and treatment matter in themselves as expressions of the right to education. UNESCO’s broader approach also connects education with learners’ outcomes and opportunities in life and work. Compared with Plato’s role-specific proposal, this framework asks not only who may enter a particular course of training, but whether the education system respects learners equally throughout their schooling and beyond.
