If a Samsung Family Hub screen is stuck or malfunctioning after a software update, restart the display first—not the refrigerator’s cooling system. If the touchscreen works, use Settings > About Family Hub > Restart. If it does not, use the display switch inside the top of the upper-right door. These steps are model- and region-dependent; a factory data reset is a later, destructive option, not the first fix.
First check whether the problem is the screen or the refrigerator
A blank Family Hub display does not necessarily mean the refrigerator has lost power. Open the door and check whether the interior lights turn on and whether the appliance is cooling. Samsung directs owners whose refrigerator has no power or cooling to its separate blank control panel or Family Hub troubleshooting rather than assuming the screen alone needs a restart.
If the refrigerator itself appears to have lost power or stopped cooling, do not treat the Family Hub display restart as a repair for that problem. Follow the guidance for the appliance’s actual symptom and model.
Restart the Family Hub display
If the touchscreen responds
- On the Family Hub screen, open Settings > About Family Hub > Restart.
- Allow the display to restart, then check whether the post-update problem has cleared.
This menu route is given in Samsung Electronics Service’s Family Hub update guidance, published in Korea on December 13, 2023, for post-update boot, slowness, or app problems. Menu labels and availability can differ by model, region, and software version; if you do not see these options, use the instructions for your specific refrigerator.

If the touchscreen does not work
- Open the refrigerator’s upper-right door.
- Find the display power switch inside the top of that door and use it to restart the screen. Depending on the model, the switch may be red and behind a cover.
- Allow the Family Hub display to restart and check its operation.
Samsung’s U.S. guidance identifies this built-in switch as the reset control for Family Hub models. It restarts the display; it is not the same as power-cycling the refrigerator.
Do not use a whole-refrigerator power cycle as a default fix
A screen restart and a refrigerator power cycle affect different parts of the appliance. Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guidance gives a 60-second power cycle for specified non-Family-Hub blank-panel cases and selected power or voltage error codes—not as a universal remedy for failed Family Hub updates. Its error-code guidance also says, “Unless directed, do not unplug the refrigerator.”

If an error code is displayed, record it before trying a reset and follow the code’s model-specific instructions. For codes 41/42 accompanied by flashing blue interior lights, Samsung specifically advises restarting Family Hub with the inside switch and requesting service if the issue continues.
Consider a factory data reset only if the display restart fails
Samsung Korea’s post-update guidance places a factory data reset after a restart has not resolved the problem. This is substantially different from restarting the display: Samsung U.S. says a factory reset deletes all data, and reset can erase error-code history and diagnostic information. Photograph any displayed code first.

Samsung Korea warns that data may not be recoverable if the refrigerator is not connected to the Samsung account. Review Samsung’s refrigerator reset guidance and the instructions for your exact model before proceeding. Samsung U.S. says it almost never recommends resetting a refrigerator except in specific troubleshooting circumstances; do not choose a factory reset simply because an update failed.

Contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider for your region and model if the display still will not boot, remains very slow, cannot run apps, or the same update-related fault returns after a display restart. Follow service guidance as well if a documented error-code procedure does not resolve the issue. The cited Samsung instructions do not provide a general user procedure for reinstalling, downgrading, or recovering firmware, so do not improvise one.
