Check the publisher’s latest official notice for the exact game and platform, then verify what it says about each mode, authentication, saves, and downloaded content. A development halt, delisting, or end to in-game purchases does not by itself mean servers are closing—or that offline play will work afterward.
How to verify a shutdown notice
- Find the publisher’s official source. Search the exact game title with “server shutdown,” “end of service,” “online services,” or “offline mode.” Check the publisher’s news, support, and game FAQ pages. Use the platform holder’s support page for platform-wide service information; for a third-party game, find the game publisher’s own notice too.
- Match the notice to your version. Confirm the platform, edition, and region it covers. PC, console, and mobile versions—or different regional editions—may have different service arrangements. Do not apply a notice beyond the scope it names.
- Record the timeline. Note when the notice was published, when sales or purchases end, any last-update date, the service cutoff, and any transfer or offline-version date. Preserve the publisher’s wording: distinguish confirmed dates from estimates or scheduled targets, and include the time zone when provided.
- Read the feature-level details. Check which modes stop and which remain; whether launching or authenticating requires a server; whether saves are local or server-based; and what happens to purchased content, downloads, and redownloads. Look for device or operating-system requirements. If the notice does not answer a question, treat the outcome as unconfirmed.
- Check for revisions before acting. Publishers can update plans and instructions. Reopen the latest relevant official notice before a stated deadline and before relying on a shutdown schedule. A plan announced by a publisher is not a guarantee that every detail is final.
Does “single-player” mean a game will work offline?
No. The label alone does not establish that a game can launch or remain playable without its servers. Check whether the publisher says offline play will continue and whether that applies to the mode you use. Authentication or launcher checks, server-hosted saves, online-only progression, or other server-dependent features can affect the result—but do not assume any of these apply to a particular title without documentation.
Also distinguish a game that retains some offline features from one that remains fully playable. A publisher may preserve only certain modes, require content to be downloaded before service ends, or support offline access only on specified devices. Use the official notice to determine what is actually covered.
What happens to downloads, purchases, and saves?
Look for separate answers about access to content already downloaded, content purchased but not downloaded, future redownloads, and saved data. A service ending may affect these differently. If the publisher requires downloads before a cutoff, follow that instruction while the service is available; do not assume purchases can be downloaded or restored afterward.

For server-based saves or purchases that may transfer to an offline version, check whether the publisher has explained the transfer method, eligible items, and timing. If those details have not been published, the transfer is not yet something you can rely on.

What if there is no shutdown announcement?
Say that the official channels you checked contain no shutdown announcement as of the date you checked them. That is not evidence that the servers are guaranteed to remain available. If the game has had service updates, revisit the publisher’s notice pages rather than relying on older coverage or an undated search result.
