If you want to avoid networking, shop by the exact model number and country, and verify the product specification and manual before buying. A fridge that works without internet may still contain Wi-Fi hardware.
What “without Wi-Fi” can mean
These are different situations, and product listings may not make the distinction obvious:
- No Wi-Fi hardware: The refrigerator has no wireless networking capability. This is the clearest match if you want to avoid Wi-Fi entirely.
- Optional Wi-Fi module: The refrigerator can connect only when a separate module is fitted. Check whether the module is included, sold separately, or still available.
- Built-in Wi-Fi kept offline: The refrigerator has wireless hardware but is not joined to your home network. That prevents network use while disconnected; it does not make the appliance a non-Wi-Fi model.
- Connected features required: Some functions may depend on an app or internet connection. Check which cooling controls and everyday functions remain available offline.

Can a smart refrigerator work without internet?
Often, but behavior depends on the model. Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove say connected appliances do not need an internet connection to be used; Whirlpool’s service aid says its WRF995FIF functions similarly to a non-smart refrigerator without internet. Neither statement establishes how every refrigerator behaves. Confirm the offline functions for the exact model in its manual.

Without internet, app-based notifications, remote controls, and monitoring may be unavailable. Does disconnecting Wi-Fi stop automatic firmware updates?
Not necessarily. Disconnecting a refrigerator from your router prevents it from receiving network updates while offline, but it does not prove that the hardware lacks Wi-Fi or that its update process is disabled. Manuals and support pages may describe update prompts or software-update functions; the available documentation does not establish one universal setting that prevents automatic updates across brands.

Before buying, check the exact model’s manual for whether updates are automatic, require user confirmation, or can be disabled. If the manual is unclear, ask the manufacturer to confirm in writing whether the refrigerator can download or install firmware without a user action. Do not assume that a general brand support page applies to every model.
How to evaluate a refrigerator before you buy
- Record the full model number and market. Include every suffix. Family names can cover models with different features, and availability can differ by country.
- Check the product page and manual. Look for whether Wi-Fi is absent, built in, or dependent on a separate module. Verify what is included and whether connected features are optional.
- Look up offline operation and updates. Find out which controls and functions work without internet, and what the manual says about firmware-update prompts, installation, and any opt-out setting.
- Compare the appliance itself. Check usable capacity, configuration, exterior dimensions, required installation clearances, ice and water features, filtration needs, energy information, warranty, and service support.
- Verify current availability. A product page or catalog entry may be archival. Confirm the exact model is currently sold in your country before treating it as a purchase option.
What the documented GE examples show
GE’s catalog lists the GNE25JMK as a 24.7 cu. ft. refrigerator with optional Wi-Fi, requiring a separately sold SmartHQ Connect Module. This is an example of optional connectivity in the cited catalog—not confirmation that the model is currently sold, that the module remains available, or that every suffix in its family has the same specification. How to choose if avoiding updates is essential
- If you require no Wi-Fi hardware, buy only after the exact model’s specifications or manufacturer confirms that wireless networking is absent.
- If you are comfortable with optional connectivity, verify that the separate module is not included or installed and that normal refrigerator operation does not depend on it.
- If you only need the fridge to stay off your network, confirm that its core controls work offline and keep it disconnected; understand that this does not remove its wireless hardware.
- If your main concern is automatic firmware updates, rely on the exact model’s manual or manufacturer confirmation—not a general claim that the appliance works offline.
