For a first field-player session, bring a field hockey stick, shin guards, a mouthguard, athletic clothing, and footwear suited to the playing surface. Ask the club or coach what it supplies before buying a ball or protective glove. Goalkeepers need a separate, much larger protective kit, which a team may be able to lend.

Beginner field hockey equipment checklist

  • Field hockey stick: The essential piece of playing equipment. USA Field Hockey says wood sticks are well suited to beginners. As a rough starting point for sizing, hold the stick vertically beside the player: it should reach about the top of the hip. Have a coach or club check the fit; this cue is not a substitute for an individual fitting. See USA Field Hockey’s equipment guidance and Game On.
  • Shin guards: FIH recommends shin protection for field players. Choose guards that fit securely and cover the shin. FIH guidance recommends tested or certified products under EN 13546, or compliance with equivalent national regulations where applicable. See FIH Personal Protective Equipment Guidance.
  • Mouthguard: FIH recommends mouth protection. Its guidance describes a good fit as snug without being too tight or loose, durable and easy to clean, and compatible with easy breathing. Stock, boil-and-bite, and custom-fitted styles are options; there is no single type specified for every beginner. See FIH Player Protective Equipment.
  • Athletic clothing and suitable shoes: Wear clothes that allow you to move and meet your team’s uniform expectations. Choose footwear for the surface you will play on, and ask the coach what is appropriate. FIH rules require team uniform clothing, but do not specify one universal shoe type for beginners.
  • Practice ball: A ball is useful for practice, but you may not need to buy one for your first session. Clubs or teams may supply shared balls, so ask first. USA Field Hockey’s beginner equipment guidance discusses introductory balls without establishing that every player must own one.

Optional and situation-specific protection

Ankle protection and gloves

FIH recommends ankle protection as well as shin and mouth protection. Hand protection is permitted if it meets the rules’ size and safety conditions, but a glove is optional under the international rules. Ask your coach whether either item is appropriate for your level, surface, and local competition.

Face mask for penalty corners

A face mask is not general-use headgear for field players under the FIH rules. Players are recommended to wear one in specific situations when defending a penalty corner or penalty stroke. Local competition rules may provide additional guidance, so check before buying one as everyday beginner equipment.

Goalkeepers need a different kit

Under the 2026 FIH Rules of Hockey, a goalkeeper must wear at least headgear, leg guards, and kickers. FIH protective-equipment guidance describes more extensive goalkeeper protection, including equipment for the hands, arms, chest, abdomen, legs, feet, and genital area. Ask the club, school, or team whether it lends goalkeeper gear before purchasing anything; this role-specific kit also needs to fit the player.

Check local requirements before you buy

  1. Ask the club or coach for its equipment list. Confirm uniform expectations, local rules, and whether the team supplies balls or goalkeeper gear.
  2. Confirm which rules apply. The international outdoor 11-a-side FIH rules are the 2026 edition, effective 1 March 2026. FIH notes that national associations may set their own implementation dates and competitions may add requirements. Check the applicable 2026 Rules of Hockey alongside your local governing body’s guidance.
  3. Have the stick checked for fit. Treat the hip-height cue as a starting point and ask a coach or club to confirm the length.
  4. Prioritize fit and protection. Check shin-guard certification or applicable national compliance, and make sure a mouthguard fits securely while allowing easy breathing.
  5. Buy for the player’s role and needs. A field player does not need a goalkeeper’s full kit, and a face mask is for specified situations rather than ordinary play.
