To preserve a cookie with no explicit SameSite attribute, set it through the Electron Session that owns the target window and specify sameSite: 'unspecified'. Don’t rely on a Playwright cookie read-and-write round trip to preserve that distinction: Playwright’s current Chromium implementation maps a missing SameSite value it reads to Lax.
Set the cookie through the correct Electron Session
Electron exposes cookie operations on a Session, and those APIs are used from the main process. Use the same Session as the BrowserWindow or web contents whose requests need the cookie. If the app uses a non-default Session, use that Session rather than session.defaultSession.
For the default Session, set the attribute explicitly:

})Electron documents unspecified as a valid SameSite value in its Cookie Object. The Cookies API documents the Session cookie methods and the default behavior: if you omit sameSite from cookies.set, Electron defaults it to lax. Explicitly setting unspecified avoids that API default.

Unspecified does not mean unrestricted cross-site use
unspecified describes the stored attribute: no explicit SameSite attribute was set. It does not promise that Chromium will send the cookie in every cross-site context. Chromium treats a cookie with no SameSite attribute as Lax by default, restricting it to first-party or same-site contexts in the default case. For a cookie that must be sent in third-party or other cross-site contexts, Chromium says to set SameSite=None and Secure. See the Chromium SameSite FAQ.
Choose the attribute for the application’s intended behavior, not merely to make a test pass. Preserving an absent attribute and enabling cross-site delivery are different requirements.

Why a Playwright cookie round trip can change the value
Playwright’s current Chromium implementation converts a missing SameSite value returned by Chromium into Lax when it creates its cookie representation. Its cookie-setting path passes the supplied SameSite value to Chromium. As a result, reading cookies through Playwright and later applying that list can lose the distinction between an absent attribute and explicit Lax. The mapping is visible in Playwright’s Chromium source.
If that distinction matters, set and inspect the cookie using Electron’s Session cookie API instead of treating a Playwright browser-context cookie list as a lossless copy. Playwright’s Electron API documents launching an Electron application and working with its windows; it does not turn Electron’s main-process Session API into a browser-context operation.

Verify the cookie and the flow it is meant to support
- Identify the window’s Session. Check whether the target window uses the default Session or a non-default one.
- Set the cookie explicitly. Call that Session’s
cookies.setfrom the Electron main process and includesameSite: 'unspecified'. - Inspect the stored value. Query the cookie through the same Electron Session API and check the reported SameSite value.
- Exercise the real request contexts. Test the relevant same-site request, cross-site navigation, cross-site POST, or embedded third-party request, as well as any federated login or payment flow the app uses.
- Investigate behavior, not just warnings. If the result is unclear, inspect DevTools issue or network details, or capture a Chromium NetLog. Chromium’s testing and debugging guide cautions that DevTools warnings alone do not establish that application functionality is broken.
For relevant cross-site POST flows, test both shortly after cookie creation and after a delay longer than two minutes. Chromium’s guidance describes a historical Lax+POST exception for newly created cookies, so a flow may behave differently over time. The behavior to validate is the behavior in the Electron version your app ships, because Electron releases bundle different Chromium versions.
