If a smart fridge stops cooling, keep its doors closed and check the actual temperature with an appliance thermometer. Keep refrigerated food at or below 40°F (4°C) and frozen food at or below 0°F (-18°C). The familiar four-hour refrigerator estimate applies to a closed refrigerator during a power outage—not automatically to a mechanical cooling failure. For a cooling fault, use the measured temperature and the time food has spent above 40°F to guide decisions.

What to do first

  1. Limit door openings. Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible while you assess the problem. Opening a door lets cold air escape.
  2. Measure temperatures. Use appliance thermometers in the refrigerator and freezer. A display, app estimate, or alert can help identify a problem, but should not replace a temperature measurement when deciding whether food is safe.
  3. Establish the timeline. Note when you first noticed cooling stop, when the refrigerator temperature rose above 40°F (4°C), and whether the doors were opened. If you do not know how long food has been above 40°F, do not assume it is safe just because the fridge has only recently alerted you.
  4. Plan temporary storage if needed. If cooling will be unavailable for an extended period, move food that remains safe to an insulated cooler with ice or frozen gel packs. Check that it stays at or below 40°F (4°C); moving food to a cooler does not make food safe again if it has already exceeded the applicable time-temperature limit.
  5. Decide item by item. Use FoodSafety.gov’s Food Safety During Power Outage chart for the actual food. Never taste food to judge whether it is safe; appearance, smell, and texture cannot establish safety.

How long can food remain in a fridge that is not cooling?

There is no universal safe countdown for every smart-fridge cooling failure. The often-quoted guidance from FoodSafety.gov is specifically about a power outage: an unopened refrigerator keeps food safe for up to four hours. The outage chart, last reviewed August 8, 2024, advises discarding refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers after four hours without power. That estimate should not be treated as a guarantee for a mechanical failure, an opened refrigerator, or food with an unknown exposure history.

FoodSafety.gov’s emergency guidance says to discard perishable food that has been above 40°F (4°C) for two hours or more, or for one hour if the surrounding temperature is above 90°F (32°C). Apply those limits to the known exposure and the food in question; uncertainty about when it warmed is not evidence that it stayed cold.

Keep the food cold: appliance or cooler?

Choose based on measured temperature, how long cooling is expected to be unavailable, and how often the storage door must be opened. In either location, the key refrigerator-food threshold is 40°F (4°C), and neither option can undo unsafe exposure that has already occurred.

Storage option When it makes sense What to monitor
Closed refrigerator Use while it remains at or below 40°F (4°C) and you can limit door openings. Check the appliance thermometer and track how long food is above 40°F if the temperature rises.
Insulated cooler with ice or frozen gel packs Use when cooling will be unavailable for an extended period and food has not already exceeded its safe exposure limit. Keep food at or below 40°F (4°C); replenish or adjust the cold packs as needed and verify with a thermometer.

FoodSafety.gov recommends having coolers available if a power outage may exceed four hours. That is outage-preparation guidance, not a promise that a cooler will hold a safe temperature for a set duration.

Use different rules for the refrigerator and freezer

Refrigerated food

Use the official outage chart for item-specific decisions rather than treating everything in the refrigerator alike. Under its stated exposure conditions, the chart advises discarding many meats, seafood, eggs, leftovers, soft cheeses, milk, and cooked vegetables. It identifies some foods—including hard cheeses, butter, uncut fresh produce, and certain shelf-stable condiments—that may be kept. The chart’s guidance depends on the food and circumstances, so check the entry for each item rather than relying on these examples alone.

GoveeLife WiFi Refrigerator Thermometer 2-Pack with Gateway & LCD Display
  • Continuous Updates: We have fixed the problem of frequent low temperature alarms. There will be no false alarm when low temperatures (<-4°F) are detected during normal operation of the freezers compressor. The software usage experience will be continuously optimized.
  • 24/7 Instant Alarms: Set preset temperature ranges, and the WiFi freezer thermometer will alert you via app when the temperature rises or drops outside of the range. The freezer temperature alarm ensures a stable connection to maintain food and equipment safety. (2.4Ghz WiFi Only)
  • Monitor Temperature Anywhere: Keep track of temperature data in real-time from anywhere with the GoveeLife's APP without subscription fee. The WiFi gateway supports pairing up to 10 sensors. And you need to connect to the gateway for APP remote alarm. If you need more freezer alarm sensors, please search ASIN:B0CLB3BTSG.
  • Upgrade Accuracy Probe: The freezer temperature monitor's wide measuring range of -40° to 158°F with ±0.9°F / 0.5°C accuracy and 2s fast refresh to ensure the data is reliable. The probes and cables are slim and sturdy, allowing flexibility to fit in the refrigerator or freezer. Our fridge thermometers bring convenience to your life!
  • Smart Anti-False Alarm: The anti-false alarm allows the freezer alarm to notify you after 1-10 mins of temperature overrun. Prevent falsely triggering the alarm when opening the refrigerator to take food. And it notifies to remind you to change the battery when it's low.

Frozen food

A closed freezer holds a safe temperature for approximately 48 hours if full, or 24 hours if half full. These are approximate retention estimates from FoodSafety.gov’s power-outage guidance, not guarantees for a freezer with a mechanical fault, an opened door, or an unknown cooling history.

Food that still has ice crystals and feels as cold as refrigerated, or measures 40°F (4°C) or below, can generally be refrozen or cooked. Follow the outage chart for the specific item and its exceptions: for example, the chart says to discard ice cream and frozen yogurt. Do not apply the general refreezing guidance to every frozen product.

What a smart-fridge alert can—and cannot—tell you

An app notification or smart display can alert you to a possible temperature problem, but it does not establish how long each food has been above 40°F (4°C). Confirm the temperature with an appliance thermometer, note the timeline, and use the food-specific chart. For the appliance fault itself, consult the exact model’s owner manual or manufacturer support. Reset procedures, app controls, and repair steps vary by make and model; there is no universal smart-fridge fix established by this food-safety guidance.
