Build the array around two requirements: how much data it must protect against drive failure, and how your training jobs actually read it. For a ZFS-based system, that means choosing between RAIDZ and mirrors, using drives suited to ZFS, enabling checksums and scrubs, monitoring both ZFS and drive health, and keeping a separate backup. No single drive count or layout is best for every AI dataset; test the intended training workload before treating storage performance as settled.
Choose an array layout for both failure tolerance and access pattern
Start by listing the available drive bays, the capacity you need, and how many simultaneous drive failures the pool must withstand. Then consider whether training reads mostly large sequential chunks or makes frequent small, random reads that cannot be served from cache. Capacity efficiency alone is not a sufficient reason to choose a parity level.
The table compares common ZFS choices for equal-sized drives. Capacity figures are approximate and exclude filesystem overhead, reservations, and other space use. RAIDZ capacity follows the OpenZFS rule of thumb (N − P) × X, where N is the number of drives, P is the number of parity drives, and X is each drive’s capacity.
| Layout | Approximate usable capacity | Drive-failure tolerance | Read-pattern fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| RAIDZ1 | (N − 1) × X | One drive in the RAIDZ group | Space-efficient; TrueNAS describes it as suitable for large-chunk reads and writes. |
| RAIDZ2 | (N − 2) × X | Two drives in the RAIDZ group | Provides more availability than RAIDZ1; still consider the workload’s read pattern. |
| Two-way mirrors | Approximately half of raw capacity when drives are paired | One failed drive in each mirror pair; losing both drives in the same pair loses that mirror’s data | Generally better for small random reads; TrueNAS favors mirrors over RAIDZ for large, uncacheable random-read loads. |
For example, one eight-drive RAIDZ2 group made from equal-sized 20 TB drives has roughly 120 TB of capacity before overhead: (8 − 2) × 20 TB. Four two-way mirror vdevs from those same drives have roughly 80 TB before overhead. The mirror arrangement can survive multiple failures if they occur in different pairs, but not both members of the same pair. These are capacity illustrations, not performance predictions.

TrueNAS recommends 3–9 disks per vdev and advises against more than 12 disks per vdev. Treat those figures as TrueNAS guidance rather than a guarantee for every OpenZFS platform. For a workload dominated by sequential reads, RAIDZ may be a sensible capacity-oriented choice. If repeated training reads are random and uncacheable, test mirrors or put the frequently accessed working set on a separate faster tier. Benchmark with representative jobs instead of assuming either layout will be faster for your data.
Match the HDDs and controller to ZFS
Check the exact drive model number and capacity for its recording technology. TrueNAS warns that shingled magnetic recording (SMR) drives can be much slower during writes and overwrites, and can cause instability or data-loss risk during resilvering. Its guidance presents SMR as a poor fit for ZFS; prefer conventional magnetic recording (CMR) unless you have verified that the exact drive and workload are suitable. Do not infer CMR or SMR from a product-family name alone.

- Use an HBA that exposes individual disks to the operating system when the host needs an add-in controller. OpenZFS recommends an HBA rather than a hardware RAID controller.
- If a controller is used, configure it for direct disk access or JBOD so ZFS can manage the disks. TrueNAS says ZFS does not need a RAID controller.
- Verify that the HBA, enclosure, cabling, and firmware expose all drives and pass through SMART data and disk errors. Check the selected platform’s guidance for error-recovery and write-cache behavior.
Enable ZFS integrity checks and plan for repair
ZFS checksums blocks and verifies them when data is read. If a checksum mismatch is found, ZFS can repair the block when a good redundant copy is available. A scrub reads stored data and checks its checksums, helping uncover latent errors before an ordinary application read reaches the affected block.

A checksum can detect corruption without guaranteeing recovery. A nonredundant pool has no correct alternate copy to use for repair, so a scrub cannot recreate good data that is not present. Set a recurring scrub schedule appropriate to the installation, and make sure scrubs finish and any reported errors are investigated.
Monitor both drive health and pool errors
ZFS error reporting and SMART monitoring serve different purposes. ZFS can report failures encountered during I/O; SMART data can provide signs of drive degradation. Use both, and route alerts to someone who can act on them rather than leaving them in an unattended dashboard.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep a separate backup and a usable restore path
RAIDZ and mirrors keep a pool available through certain drive failures; they do not protect against every cause of data loss. TrueNAS’s ZFS Primer states, “RAID and disk redundancy are not substitutes for a reliable backup strategy.” Keep an independent copy of important training data. ZFS snapshots and automated replication can form part of that strategy, but the replica must be separate from the failure risks of the primary pool.

Write down how to restore the data and verify that the backup copy can be read. Choose a backup schedule based on how much data you can afford to lose and how quickly you need to recover; the appropriate schedule depends on the dataset and operation.
Benchmark the dataset, not the label “AI”
AI datasets do not share one storage access pattern. NVIDIA DGX guidance notes that vision workloads may need streaming bandwidth, random access, or fast memory-mapped reads. Text and speech workloads can combine bandwidth demands with random and small-file access. Reading many small files can reduce performance on local and network filesystems; where the framework supports it, packaging data into archives or databases may help, but it is not a universal requirement.
- Choose a representative training pipeline and dataset sample, including the real file sizes and access pattern.
- Run representative batch reads or epochs on each candidate layout under comparable conditions.
- Record whether the job is waiting on storage or is limited elsewhere in the system; a faster array will not help if storage is not the bottleneck.
- Change one storage setting or layout at a time and repeat the same test before keeping the change.
Storage tuning depends on workload. Do not copy record-size or cache settings without checking the dataset’s shape and read/write pattern. No fixed training speed can be predicted from drive count alone, and there is no comparative throughput result here for a particular array or training pipeline.
