To tell whether an online deal is genuinely good, compare the exact same product and variant at several sellers, check its recent price history, and compare the total you would pay at checkout. A discount badge, “was” price or recommended retail price (RRP) is a claim—not proof of a bargain.
1. Make sure you are comparing the same item
Start with the manufacturer and model number, then match the details that affect the offer: size, colour, capacity, condition and included accessories. A similar-looking product or a different variant is not a fair comparison. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises shoppers to note the manufacturer, model and relevant details such as size and colour before comparing offers in its online-shopping advice.
2. Compare several sellers, then verify the listing
Check the same variant at multiple retailers and, if useful, more than one price-comparison site. Results can vary between sites, so a single ranking is not definitive. The UK consumer organisation Which? recommends checking more than one comparison site; it names Google Shopping, PriceRunner and PriceSpy as examples in its price-comparison guide.

A high position on a comparison page does not necessarily mean the lowest price: the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) cautions that paid placement can affect rankings in its shopping advice. Confirm the model, variant, availability and terms on the seller’s page.

3. Put the sale price in context
When available, check a price-history chart or alert for the exact item and region. It can show whether today’s price is unusual compared with that product’s recent prices, rather than merely lower than a reference price chosen for an advert. Which? suggests CamelCamelCamel for Amazon and PriceRunner for broader comparisons in its price guide. History services may not cover every retailer or variant, so make sure the chart actually matches the listing you are considering.
Do not treat a discount percentage, an RRP or a crossed-out “was” price as evidence on its own. An RRP is suggested by the manufacturer; it does not establish that a retailer sold the item at that price. Compare recent prices and current offers for the same model instead. For example, Which? describes a washing machine listed at £250 by four shops, where one shop’s “now £250, was £300” label did not make its current price a standout deal. 4. Compare the amount you will actually pay
Compare the checkout total, not just the headline price. Include shipping, handling, taxes and any unavoidable fees. Also account for conditions such as a membership requirement or minimum spend, and read the offer terms. The FTC advises comparing the full cost and checking deal terms in its online-shopping guidance.

For UK shoppers, the CMA’s price-transparency guidance says traders should show the total price up front, including charges consumers cannot avoid. That is UK guidance and should not be assumed to describe the law in other countries; see the CMA’s summary, updated 7 January 2026.

5. Check condition, seller and returns
A low price may reflect a different product condition or a less favourable offer. Check whether the item is new, refurbished, vintage or close-out, and confirm exactly what is included. Review the seller’s reputation, delivery promise and return terms; check whether the seller is authorised if that matters for the product or its warranty.
Be especially cautious when a branded product is far cheaper than comparable offers. The FTC warns that unusually low prices for expensive branded goods can indicate counterfeit or stolen goods in its shopping advice. Price alone does not verify a seller or an item’s authenticity.

6. Decide whether to buy now or wait
Even if the offer is not unusually low, a retailer’s price-match policy or a refund or credit if the price drops soon after purchase could affect your decision. Check the policy’s eligibility rules and time limit before relying on it; the FTC advises shoppers to look for price matching or a post-purchase price adjustment in its online-shopping guidance.
There is no discount percentage that makes every deal good. Judge the exact item, its recent price, competing offers, condition, total cost and whether you need it now. This is practical consumer guidance, not individualized legal advice.
