For a reef aquarium, choose light by the photons reaching each coral, the wavelengths in that light, and how long the light runs—not by fixture brightness or color alone. There is no single PAR target, blue-to-white mix, or schedule established for every coral. Measure at coral level, adjust for the species and tank, and include a consistent dark period.

What is PAR?

PAR, or photosynthetically active radiation, refers to photons in the 400–700 nm range. Aquarium PAR readings are typically expressed as micromoles per square metre per second (µmol m⁻² s⁻¹). PAR is useful for comparing the amount of photosynthetically relevant light, but it does not tell you how that light is distributed across wavelengths.

Watts describe energy use, while lumens and lux weight light for human vision. Color temperature and a fixture’s dimmer percentage also do not directly tell you how many PAR photons reach a coral. Treat them as different measurements rather than substitutes for a coral-level PAR reading.

How much PAR do corals need?

There is no established universal numeric PAR target for all marine aquarium corals. Needs vary by coral and by where it sits in the aquarium, so a value measured at the water surface cannot stand in for the light at the coral’s location. NOAA’s technical memo excerpt identifies submersible measurement at coral depth as more relevant; immersion correction and sensor geometry can also affect readings (NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program technical memo 18).

NICREW ClassicLED Marine Saltwater Aquarium Light, 48W for 48–60 inch Tanks
  • Features 445nm and 460nm blue, 10,000K white, and RGB LEDs, a higher ratio of actinic blue spectrum LEDs balanced with full spectrum creates the ideal color combination for the saltwater environment
  • Comes with the day+night controller to adjust the lighting spectrum, simulate a gradual sunrise and fading sunset through the gradual increase and decrease of light intensity.
  • One ClassicLED Marine light will support saltwater fish, live rock, soft coral, and LPS corals. For low light SPS corals, we suggest using two lights
  • Available in multiple sizes and includes extendable brackets on both ends to accommodate both rimless and framed aquariums length 48 - 60 inch
  • A glass or acrylic canopy is highly recommended to extend the life of the unit by preventing moisture from affecting it

Build a map of readings across the locations where you intend to keep corals. Use the same sensor type and placement when comparing spots or checking changes over time. A study of Goniopora columna, for example, recorded daily PAR with an Apogee MQ-510 underwater quantum meter; that is one documented tool, not a requirement for every hobbyist (2022 study in Animals).

Look for a submersible quantum sensor designed for underwater PAR measurement if you buy a meter. A fixture’s advertised output or a surface reading may help describe the setup, but neither establishes the exposure at a coral’s position.

What spectrum is best for corals?

Spectrum is the mix of wavelengths emitted by a light. A PAR reading measures the overall photon flux within 400–700 nm, not whether those photons are mostly blue, red, or other colors. The Monaco Oceanographic Institute’s coral pathology and management guide cites a preference in symbiotic corals for higher irradiance in the 400–500 nm range and lower irradiance in the 650–700 nm range. This is husbandry guidance, not a complete fixture recipe or proof that every coral responds alike (Institut océanographique de Monaco guide).

One controlled experiment illustrates why species and conditions matter. Over eight weeks, researchers tested white, yellow, red, green, blue, and purple LED treatments on Goniopora columna, with 30 colonies per group and daily schedules of six or 12 hours. Under that setup, blue light at 440–470 nm and purple at 400–430 nm had favorable measured outcomes; the authors concluded that 400–470 nm could be a primary illumination range for efficient cultivation of this species. That result does not establish a narrow-band lighting prescription for a mixed reef (study in Animals).

  • Auto On/Off: With a built-in timer, the saltwater aquarium light provides 3 optional lighting durations: 8 h, 10 h and 12 h (Only work during the first 8, 10 or 12 hours within 24 hours). Perfect for creating a natural environment
  • For 48" to 54" Tanks: With an extendable bracket (min. length: up to 48"; max. length: up to 53"), the IP68 waterproof LED reef light for coral always stays steady above the fish tank. Work best on tanks with a length of 48 to 54 inches

A separate study of Galaxea fascicularis reported no significant main effect of spectrum on specific growth rate in its tested comparison. Taken together, these studies do not support a universal blue-versus-white rule (study in Aquaculture).

Adjustable channels can help balance coral illumination with the appearance you want, but product descriptions are not independent husbandry rules. Philips/Signify describes its CoralCare Gen2 as having two controllable channels and multiple blue wavelengths, including 415–490 nm, to address coral appearance, fluorescence, and growth goals (Philips CoralCare spectral information).

How long should reef lights be on?

Photoperiod is the daily period of illumination; it must be considered alongside intensity, with a regular dark period included in the schedule. Red Sea Chief Scientist Sharon Ram’s January 2020 guidance recommends about 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness and describes an inverse relationship between intensity and duration. Treat this as Red Sea’s recommendation, not a universal biological threshold (Red Sea photoperiod guidance).

The Goniopora columna experiment tested six- and 12-hour daily schedules and reported favorable blue or purple outcomes with at least six hours of illumination for that species under its experimental conditions. It does not settle the schedule for other corals, mixed reefs, or different intensities.

Keep display effects separate from the main photoperiod. Red Sea’s guidance says moonlight should be very low or counted as part of the photoperiod. A peer-reviewed study of artificial light at night exposed Red Sea corals to white LED light overnight; one treatment group received 1–1.5 µmol quanta m⁻² s⁻¹ (35–40 lux). The study reported oxidative stress and photosynthetic impairment under its exposure conditions. That experimental level is not a recommended aquarium night-light setting, and the findings do not show that every brief, dim moonlight setting is harmful (study of artificial light at night in Red Sea corals).

How can you tell if the light may be excessive?

Red Sea’s guidance identifies tissue retraction and paling as possible signs of photoinhibition. Those symptoms are not a diagnosis on their own, but they are a reason to review measured intensity, exposure duration, and recent lighting changes rather than assuming the coral needs a brighter setting (Red Sea photoperiod guidance).

  • Check PAR at the coral’s position, not just at the surface.
  • Review the daily schedule and whether the tank gets a clear dark period.
  • Consider whether the coral was recently moved or exposed to a lighting change.

What should you compare when choosing a reef light?

Assess a fixture against the aquarium and its corals, rather than treating a manufacturer’s spectrum description as a universal performance ranking.

  • PAR distribution: Look for measured coverage at the positions where corals will be kept.
  • Spectrum and adjustability: Check which channels and wavelengths can be controlled, and whether the fixture can provide the coverage your coral mix calls for.
  • Scheduling and dimming: Make sure controls let you set a consistent photoperiod and preserve darkness.
  • Fit: Match coverage and fixture dimensions to the tank and coral layout.

Published product information from Philips/Signify and Red Sea can explain their respective fixture features and recommendations, but it does not establish an independent comparative winner.
