Choose aquarium lighting by matching fixture coverage and useful output to your tank’s dimensions, water depth, and livestock. Reef tanks with photosynthetic corals need more deliberate planning than fish-only tanks, where lighting is mainly for viewing. There is no single fixture, setting, or schedule that suits every marine aquarium.

Start with your tank dimensions and livestock

Measure the aquarium’s length, width, and water depth, then note where you intend to place corals. Match those details to the coverage information for the exact fixture and mounting height you are considering. A long tank may need multiple lights or a bar-style fixture to avoid dim ends; deeper water or more demanding corals can also change the output required.

Plan around the animals, not just the tank’s appearance. As general manufacturer guidance, EcoTech Marine says SPS-dominant aquariums generally need more intense lighting, while LPS and soft-coral aquariums typically need less. These are broad categories, not universal thresholds. In a mixed reef, light levels can vary across the tank, so position corals according to their needs rather than assuming every location receives the same amount.

For a fish-only aquarium, prioritize even, attractive viewing and a schedule that suits the room and fish. If the tank contains photosynthetic corals, coverage and light at coral positions become essential selection criteria.

NICREW ClassicLED Marine Saltwater Aquarium Light, 48W for 48–60 inch Tanks
  • Features 445nm and 460nm blue, 10,000K white, and RGB LEDs, a higher ratio of actinic blue spectrum LEDs balanced with full spectrum creates the ideal color combination for the saltwater environment
  • Comes with the day+night controller to adjust the lighting spectrum, simulate a gradual sunrise and fading sunset through the gradual increase and decrease of light intensity.
  • One ClassicLED Marine light will support saltwater fish, live rock, soft coral, and LPS corals. For low light SPS corals, we suggest using two lights
  • Available in multiple sizes and includes extendable brackets on both ends to accommodate both rimless and framed aquariums length 48 - 60 inch
  • A glass or acrylic canopy is highly recommended to extend the life of the unit by preventing moisture from affecting it

How many lights do I need for my aquarium?

There is no reliable fixture count based on tank volume alone. The answer depends on the aquarium’s footprint, depth, the chosen fixture’s coverage at its mounting height, and the livestock’s light needs. Use coverage information for the named model only; figures for one generation or model should not be carried over to another.

When comparing options, consider how evenly each can illuminate the whole footprint, including the ends and areas behind rockwork. A fixture that appears adequate over the center may leave shadows or low-light zones elsewhere. Compare the expected light field at coral locations, not just the fixture’s headline output or the number of units.

What PAR do my corals need?

PAR measurements help you map light at the places where corals will live. EcoTech Marine’s 2020 G5 guide gives 75–150 PAR as an example of a medium-light level for an eight-hour peak photoperiod; the guide says targets depend on photoperiod, coral species, flow, and other tank parameters. Treat that as a conditional example, not a universal target for all corals or aquariums. See EcoTech’s lighting guidance.

Use a PAR meter designed for LED lighting when mapping an LED fixture, as EcoTech recommends. Measurements are useful for comparing locations and checking whether light reaches intended coral placements, but PAR does not describe the full spectrum. Kessil cautions that meters may be less sensitive in blue and UV wavelengths and that equal PAR readings can represent different wavelength mixes. Readings therefore inform placement and adjustment; they do not, by themselves, predict coral response or prove that two lights are equivalent.

How do I choose a reef tank LED?

Compare fixtures across the factors that affect your tank in practice, rather than selecting by brand or a single specification.

  • Coverage: Check the illuminated footprint at the mounting height you can use, including ends and likely shadowed areas.
  • Useful output: Consider light at intended coral positions and whether it can serve the livestock you plan to keep.
  • Spectrum and schedules: Look for controls that let you set a stable schedule suited to your livestock and viewing preference.
  • Spread and appearance: Account for shadows, how evenly the light is distributed, and whether you prefer a particular visual presentation.
  • Installation and operation: Check mounting, app or controller requirements, and whether any separate timer or controller is compatible with the exact fixture.
  • Total setup: Include the number of fixtures and any additional control equipment needed for the coverage and operation you want.

Blue- or white-heavy appearance is a preference and husbandry decision, not a shortcut for judging growth potential. EcoTech says both blue and white schedule types have been used successfully and frames schedule choice around livestock and preference. Its current Radion product page identifies the G6 line and describes its features as manufacturer claims; verify the current model, dimensions, and coverage before choosing one. Do not apply G5 sizing figures to a G6 fixture.

Set a stable schedule and acclimate gradually

When adding a new fixture or increasing intensity, start conservatively rather than copying another aquarist’s percentage setting. A percentage is meaningful only in the context of that fixture, mounting height, tank dimensions, and livestock.

  1. Map the starting conditions: Record fixture position and schedule, and measure PAR at coral locations if you have a suitable meter.
  2. Use acclimation controls where available: EcoTech recommends its acclimation mode when introducing Radion lighting or changing intensity.
  3. Observe livestock and make small changes: Monitor coral response, adjust gradually, and allow time for the aquarium to adapt before changing settings again.
  4. Keep operation consistent: Favor a stable schedule over frequent color or intensity changes made for appearance alone.

EcoTech Marine support puts the principle this way: “What’s most important to remember, the way in which you program your Radions should be specific to your aquarium and your preferences.” See “How Should I Program My Radion?”.

Check control compatibility before buying

A timer may be sufficient for basic on-and-off operation, but fuller control can require a compatible controller. Kessil says a timer works and recommends its controller options for fuller operation; check the requirements for the exact light you are considering rather than assuming controllers are interchangeable. See Kessil’s aquarium FAQ.
