Crew watches keep the boat operating continuously. Food carried aboard remains a major limit on how long a patrol can last, and exact arrangements depend on the submarine class and mission.
How does a nuclear submarine make power underwater?
A submarine reactor does not directly turn seawater into motion. In the U.S. Navy’s described pressurized-water system, reactor heat warms water in a closed primary loop. That heat passes through steam generators to a separate secondary loop, where water becomes steam. The steam drives propulsion turbines and turbine generators, then is condensed back into water for reuse. The two loops keep their water separate.
No step in this power-production process requires atmospheric air or oxygen, so the boat does not have to surface for air or battery recharge to keep propulsion and electrical systems operating. The Royal Navy describes the Astute-class PWR 2 reactor similarly: it makes steam to drive engines and generate electricity. Designs vary by class, so these examples should not be treated as a blueprint for every nuclear submarine. U.S. Navy, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Overview; Royal Navy, Astute Class.
How do the crew get air and water?
Submarine life-support systems replenish breathable oxygen, remove unwanted contaminants from the air, and make usable fresh water from seawater. The U.S. Navy says its submarine systems produce oxygen and purified water from seawater; the Naval History and Heritage Command describes equipment that makes fresh air and water, filters toxic vapors, and distills seawater. Royal Navy pages also say Astute-class boats can produce oxygen and drinking water, and HMS Vanguard can generate its own water and oxygen.

What supplies limit a long underwater patrol?
Oxygen and water can be replenished onboard, but food is finite. The U.S. Navy says the amount of food the boat carries is the primary limit on the length of a submerged patrol once it can produce oxygen and purified water. Royal Navy descriptions make a similar point about range for the named Astute and Vanguard classes. That does not establish one universal patrol duration: mission, class, and provisions matter.

- This is a plastic model kit (unbuilt / unpainted) - NOT A TOY
- ASSEMBLY AND PAINTING REQUIRED (glue and paint not included)
- Contains parts to build one model.
A Royal Navy catering account published 15 April 2019 describes food planning for about 140 people aboard HMS Vengeance, a Vanguard-class submarine, for months. It notes the challenge of feeding the crew after fresh produce runs out, with no at-sea replenishment or port-visit top-up for that team during the patrol discussed. The figure is a dated example, not a standard crew size or provisioning formula. Royal Navy, Feeding a submarine crew; U.S. Navy, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Overview.
How does the crew keep the submarine operating continuously?
Submarines use watch rotations so that essential tasks continue while individual crew members rest. The Royal Navy says two rotating watches aboard Astute-class boats allow the vessel to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its HMS Vanguard description says two crews take turns on duty, while the other crew is on leave or training at base. These arrangements are specific to the cited classes and should not be generalized to every submarine. Royal Navy, Astute Class; Royal Navy, Vanguard Class.

Does a nuclear submarine need to refuel during a patrol?
Reactor refuelling is separate from the need to carry food and other mission supplies. The Royal Navy says HMS Ambush’s reactor is not expected to need refuelling during its 25-year service period. That is a claim about this Astute-class boat and its stated service life, not a promise about all nuclear submarines or a measure of how long a patrol can last. The page does not state a publication date. Royal Navy, HMS Ambush.

What determines how long a submarine can stay submerged?
- Power: The reactor’s heat drives a steam system for propulsion and electricity without relying on outside air.
- Life support: Onboard systems can make oxygen and fresh water and filter the atmosphere.
- People: Watch schedules and crew rotations sustain continuous operations.
- Supplies: Food carried aboard is a major endurance constraint in the U.S. Navy and Royal Navy examples cited here.
