After installing OpenWrt, first set a strong root password, configure Wi-Fi security before enabling wireless, protect remote administration, and save a backup. Then set the router’s identity and time, check its installed release, and update only through a method supported by that release and device. LuCI screens and hardware capabilities vary, so use the documentation for your version where paths differ.
1. Set a strong root password
A fresh OpenWrt installation has no preset root password. OpenWrt’s post-installation FAQ says to set one at first login, whether you connect through telnet or the WebUI. Do this before using the router for routine administration.
Choose a unique, hard-to-guess password and store it securely. LuCI and command-line configuration changes may be staged rather than applied immediately; follow the interface’s save/apply prompts so the password change takes effect. OpenWrt explains this behavior in its basic configuration guide.
2. Secure Wi-Fi before turning it on
Wi-Fi is disabled on a new installation so you can configure credentials before exposing the network. Set a passphrase and enable only the wireless networks you intend to use. The OpenWrt Wi-Fi walkthrough covers the initial setup.

Choose a security mode your devices support
Use WPA3 if both the router’s radio and the devices that need to connect support it. If they do not, use WPA2 and apply the mitigations described in OpenWrt’s security hardening guidance. The suitable mode depends on the particular hardware, build, and client devices; do not assume every OpenWrt router offers the same options.
Set the correct country code
Configure the country where the router operates, then keep its wireless settings within local radio regulations. OpenWrt’s Wi-Fi configuration documentation covers the country-code setting. Do not raise transmit power beyond the limits that apply where the device is used.

3. Protect administration access
Use HTTPS for LuCI administration and encrypted SSH for command-line access. Avoid relying on an unencrypted administration session across networks you do not control. OpenWrt’s security hardening guide describes protections for management access.
The exact setup path can differ by release and device image, so consult the documentation matching your installation rather than applying a single command or package instruction universally. Also consider which interfaces should be able to reach the administration services; do not expose management to the WAN unless you have a specific, secured need.

4. Give the router a useful identity and correct time
Set a recognizable hostname so the router is easier to identify on your network. Set the correct timezone and confirm that time synchronization is configured; accurate timestamps make system logs more useful when diagnosing a problem. OpenWrt’s system configuration documentation describes hostname, timezone, logging, and NTP settings. The documented timezone default is UTC, which may not match your location.
5. Record the installed release and make a backup
Check the installed release information shown by the device, then consult instructions for that release and your exact hardware. OpenWrt’s post-installation FAQ points users to the installed banner and release information.
Once the initial configuration is working, create a configuration backup and keep it somewhere you can access if the router becomes unavailable. Review what the archive contains and follow the documented restore process before depending on it. See OpenWrt’s backup and restore guide.

6. Update using the method intended for your version
Firmware upgrades and package operations are different tasks. Do not blindly upgrade every installed package: OpenWrt warns that unsupported bulk package upgrades can cause problems. First identify your installed release, check the device-specific release notes, and follow a supported firmware upgrade path for that hardware. Check the package manager for your release
Package manager instructions depend on the OpenWrt version: 25.12 and newer use apk, while 24.10 and older use opkg. Do not copy a command written for the other package manager. OpenWrt documents package handling at Managing packages.

Verify current release information
At the time reflected by OpenWrt’s release pages, the 25.12 series listed 25.12.5 as its latest stable release, dated 1 July 2026. Release information changes; verify the current status and read the notes for your device before upgrading. OpenWrt’s 25.12 release page and 25.12.5 service release notes provide the relevant details for that release.
Settings that depend on your network
There is no single WAN, LAN, DNS, firewall, or performance configuration that is right for every OpenWrt installation. Those choices depend on the router’s role and the network it joins. Before changing them, check that you understand the effect on existing connections and have a working backup or recovery route. For staged configuration changes, save and apply them as the interface directs.
