Start by securing your Pixel 5: set a screen lock, review app permissions and lock-screen notifications, and check Play Protect and Find My Device. Then keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled, and tune display settings to balance battery life with readability and convenience. One important limitation: Google lists the Pixel 5 as no longer receiving Android version or security updates.
How should you set up Pixel 5 security and privacy first?
Before changing convenience settings, make sure the phone is protected and that apps have only the access you intend. Settings names and paths can vary with the Android version and region installed on your phone; if a path below differs, search Settings for the named feature.
- Set a screen lock. Open Settings and find the screen lock controls under Security. Choose a PIN, pattern, or password you can remember; a screen lock helps prevent someone with physical access from opening the phone.
- Review Security warnings and Play Protect. Open Settings > Security and check for warnings. In the Play Store, open your profile menu and look for Play Protect to review its status and available scan controls.
- Check Find My Device. Find the Find My Device control in Settings and confirm it is enabled if you want the option to locate or secure a misplaced phone. Availability and labels can depend on software version and account setup.
- Audit app permissions. In Settings, open Privacy or Permission manager and review access to location, camera, microphone, contacts, and other sensitive data. Remove permissions an app does not need for its purpose; you can grant access again if a feature requires it.
- Choose what appears on the lock screen. Review lock-screen notification settings under Notifications or Display. Hiding sensitive notification content can improve privacy, while showing details makes messages easier to read without unlocking.
Which Pixel 5 battery settings should you change?
Keep Adaptive Battery and optimization on
Google recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled. The phone learns from recent app-use patterns, and Google notes that optimization after setup or a reset may take a few weeks. These features are not a routine fix to disable when battery life disappoints; first give them time to adapt and adjust the display choices below.
Google describes the behavior this way: “The Pixel battery continuously learns your behaviors and optimizes itself based on your most recent app usage.” See Google’s Pixel battery help.

Balance display use against convenience
The Pixel 5 has a 6.0-inch FHD+ OLED display, and its Smooth Display supports refresh rates up to 90 Hz, according to Google’s Pixel 5 specifications. Higher brightness, a display that stays on, and smoother motion can be useful, but they may use more power. There is no single best combination; choose based on how you use the phone.
- Brightness: Lower brightness to a comfortable level, or leave Adaptive brightness on if you want the phone to adjust to surrounding light. Very low brightness may make the screen difficult to read.
- Screen timeout: Choose a shorter timeout if you often leave the phone idle with the screen on. A longer timeout is more convenient when reading, but keeps the display active longer.
- Always-on Display: Turn it off if you prefer to save display power over seeing information while the phone is idle.
- Smooth Display: Turn it off if you would rather favor power savings over the smoother scrolling and motion available at up to 90 Hz.
- Dark theme: Try it if you prefer a darker interface. It can also reduce power use on an OLED screen, though the effect depends on what is displayed and how you use the phone.
Look under Display for brightness, timeout, theme, and refresh-related controls; exact labels or availability can differ by installed software.

How can you make Pixel 5 text and colors more comfortable?
Pixel settings include controls for Night Light, color appearance, font size, and display size. Night Light changes the screen’s color temperature, while font and display size controls can make text or interface elements easier to see. Open Settings and search for “Night Light,” “color,” “font size,” or “display size” if the menu path on your phone differs. Google’s display settings help covers multiple Pixel generations, so confirm that each option is present on your Pixel 5 and software version.
Which Pixel 5 shortcuts are worth setting up?
Shortcuts are optional; use them only if they suit your habits. Google’s Pixel gesture guide describes swiping the fingerprint sensor to open notifications and using Power-button shortcuts. Follow the instructions shown for your handset, since steps may vary by device or software version.

No. Google’s current Pixel update-support list says the Pixel 5 no longer receives Android version or security updates. You can check the Android version and security update level installed on your phone in Settings, typically under About phone or Security, but changing settings cannot restore official update support. This is a significant consideration if you rely on the Pixel 5 as your primary phone, especially for sensitive accounts or work.
