Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a Proxmox VM is slow, first identify what is constrained: host CPU, guest or host memory, or storage latency and throughput. Ballooning, disk-cache modes, and extra vCPUs are not universal performance fixes. Measure the problem, check the guest’s drivers and virtual hardware, then change one setting at a time.
How should you diagnose a slow Proxmox VM?
- Identify the bottleneck. Compare host and guest telemetry to determine whether CPU contention, memory pressure, or storage performance is limiting the workload. A VM symptom alone does not establish which resource is at fault.
- Use the right level of testing. Proxmox describes
pveperfas a quick, general overview of CPU and hard-disk performance. It is not a substitute for detailed I/O tests when storage performance is in question. See the Proxmox VE Administration Guide. - Check virtual hardware and guest support. Verify the disk controller, I/O-thread setting, and that the appropriate VirtIO drivers are installed and loaded before attributing slow I/O to the host.
- Change one variable at a time. Keep the workload and measurement method consistent, and preserve data safety while comparing results.
Should you disable memory ballooning in Proxmox?
Not by default. Proxmox’s migration guidance recommends enabling the ballooning device even when an administrator does not plan to reclaim memory dynamically, because the device also supports detailed guest memory usage reporting. Ballooning lets the host and guest adjust available guest memory within configured limits; it does not create physical RAM. Its behavior depends on the configured minimum and maximum and on compatible guest support.
Whether ballooning suits a particular workload depends on its memory demand and sensitivity to changes in available memory. Check that the guest driver is available, review the configured limits, and observe guest behavior under representative load rather than assuming that disabling ballooning will improve performance. The official guidance does not establish a universal performance advantage for disabling it. See Proxmox’s migration guidance.
What is the best disk cache setting for a Proxmox VM?
There is no universally fastest or safest cache mode established by the cited Proxmox documentation. The generated qm command synopsis shows that disk cache is configurable, but the right choice depends on workload measurements and the durability guarantees of the host’s storage stack.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Consider how the chosen mode interacts with host crashes, power loss, and the underlying storage design.
- Do not treat writeback as a generic speed fix or recommend
unsafewithout understanding and accepting its data-safety implications. - Measure the actual workload on the actual storage backend, changing only one setting between comparisons.
How much CPU overcommit is safe in Proxmox?
No single vCPU-to-core ratio is a universal safe recommendation. The effect of assigning more vCPUs depends on whether workloads are idle or CPU-bound, how many VMs compete for host CPU time, and how sensitive they are to latency. Monitor host CPU contention and guest responsiveness, then right-size vCPUs to observed demand. A ratio that works for lightly used guests may not suit concurrent, latency-sensitive workloads.
Which virtual disk and guest settings should you check?
For migrated VMs
Proxmox recommends VirtIO SCSI single for efficient VirtIO SCSI disk access and I/O-thread support. Its migration guidance also recommends enabling an I/O thread, enabling discard when it is useful for thin-provisioned storage, and installing the QEMU guest agent for improved host-guest communication and command execution. These settings still require the appropriate guest drivers and a storage design that supports the intended behavior.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For VirtIO drivers
Make sure VirtIO drivers are installed and loaded in the guest. A Windows installation may require providing the VirtIO drivers ISO; a Linux guest may need the drivers included in its initramfs. If the guest lacks a functioning driver, selecting a virtual device type alone does not ensure it can use that device properly. Consult the migration guide and verify exact settings against the Proxmox VE version you run.
Why is my Proxmox VM disk slow, and when should you upgrade storage?
First establish that storage is the bottleneck rather than CPU or memory pressure. Proxmox recommends fast, redundant storage, says best results are achieved with SSDs, and recommends SSDs with power-loss protection for good performance. These are category-level recommendations, not a guarantee that an SSD will resolve a particular VM’s symptoms.

If measurements point to storage, assess capacity, interface, endurance, power-loss protection, and compatibility with the host’s storage architecture before choosing an upgrade. Proxmox does not endorse a specific SSD model in the cited documentation. Its Administration Guide also recommends redundant storage.

Proxmox’s 9.x Administration Guide lists at least 2 GB for the host operating system and Proxmox VE services, in addition to memory designated for guests. It also gives an approximate additional requirement of 1 GB per TB of used storage for Ceph and ZFS. These are published planning recommendations, not guaranteed sizing rules for every installation; actual needs depend on workloads and configuration. Check the Proxmox documentation index for the current 9.x guide and confirm guidance for your deployed version.
