To prevent a recursive Salesforce flow, make it run only when the relevant business condition is met, and check whether the field that matters actually changed. If the flow only changes fields on the record that triggered it, use a before-save record-triggered flow and assign values to $Record; Salesforce saves those changes with the original transaction, avoiding a separate update and another automation pass.
“Flow runs twice,” repeated actions, duplicate business records, and the error “Maximum number of duplicate updates in one batch (12 allowed)” are not the same problem. The right fix depends on which one you have.
First identify what is repeating
Before changing a flow, identify the object, trigger, fields involved, and the exact repeated result. A second pass through automation is different from creating two business records, and both differ from Salesforce’s duplicate scheduled-update batch error.
- Recursive automation: a flow or trigger updates a record, causing automation to run again in the same transaction or a later one.
- Repeated actions: an email, task, or other action happens more than once, even if there is no duplicate business record.
- Duplicate business records: multiple records represent the same real-world entity or event. This calls for matching, validation, or duplicate-prevention logic.
- Duplicate scheduled-update error: a flow involving a Wait element generates duplicate scheduled actions for a record during a bulk operation.
Trace the full path that changes the record. The initiating edit could come from the Salesforce UI, an import, an API integration, another flow, Apex, Process Builder, or a workflow field update. More than one automation entry point can contribute to what looks like a single flow problem. Salesforce’s record-triggered automation architecture guide recommends choosing a primary entry point as application scope and complexity grow.

Choose before-save or after-save based on the work
For field changes limited to the record that started the transaction, a before-save record-triggered flow is generally the right pattern. Assign the new values to $Record; do not use an after-save Update Records element to save the triggering record again when a before-save assignment can do the job.
| Question | Before-save flow | After-save flow |
|---|---|---|
| What can it change? | Fields on the triggering record only. | Can perform post-save work, including changes to related records. |
| Does it need the record’s assigned ID? | Use after-save if the work requires the saved record ID. | Appropriate when the saved ID is needed. |
| How does it save changes to the triggering record? | Assignments to $Record are saved with the original transaction, avoiding a separate save. |
A separate update to the triggering record can cause another automation pass. |
| What elements are supported? | Assignment, Decision, Get Records, and Loop. | Use when post-save capabilities or other actions are required; see Salesforce’s before-save flow guidance and flow types reference. |
| What should govern execution? | Specific start criteria for the business condition. | Specific start criteria for the business condition. |
Salesforce says a before-save record-triggered flow can update a record 10 times faster than a record-change process. That comparison is Salesforce’s stated product context, not a general performance guarantee for every org or automation design.
Use after-save when the flow must create or update related records, needs the saved record ID, or performs work beyond changing the triggering record. If that work updates the original record, its start criteria still need to prevent an unnecessary re-entry.

Make the flow run only for the meaningful change
Start conditions should describe the event that warrants the work—not merely that the record was edited. For an update-triggered flow, select the option that runs only when the record is updated to meet the condition requirements, where that matches the intended behavior. Salesforce explains the options and condition logic in its record-triggered flow start guidance.

A formula can use $Record and $RecordPrior to test whether that field changed. Confirm the formula is valid for the specific trigger and field types before activation. Salesforce Architects describes this field-change comparison as a more precise recursion control than relying on a static flag for the flow/Apex design concern discussed in its architecture guide.
Specific start criteria matter especially when a flow’s action updates a field on the same record. If the flow is intended to act when Status becomes “Approved,” key its criteria to that state transition rather than every update to the record. This limits needless runs and makes the intended behavior easier to reason about.

Troubleshoot a flow that runs twice
- Describe the symptom precisely. Record the object, trigger type, fields changed, repeated action, and whether the result is a second automation pass, a duplicate record, or an error message.
- Inventory automation for the object and fields. Review before-save and after-save flows, Apex triggers, Process Builder processes, workflow field updates, and upstream imports or integrations. Check which of them can write the triggering record or a field used by another flow’s criteria.
- Remove an unnecessary second save. If the flow only changes fields on the triggering record, replace its after-save Update Records operation with before-save assignments when the required behavior is supported there.
- Narrow the start criteria. Target the required state or transition, and compare current and prior values for the field that matters when unrelated edits are causing runs.
- Coordinate separate flows where needed. Set trigger-order values for flows of the same type on the same object when their sequence matters; ordering is not a substitute for specific criteria or avoiding needless updates.
- Test the real entry paths in a sandbox. Exercise relevant UI edits, imports, and API updates, then confirm the expected actions occur once and unrelated edits do not trigger them. Salesforce recommends sandbox testing in its record-triggered flow getting-started guidance.
Coordinate flow order without mistaking it for a recursion fix
Salesforce permits trigger-order values from 1 to 2,000 for before-save or after-save record-triggered flows. The values coordinate flows of the same trigger type on the same object; they do not override Salesforce’s overall order-of-execution rules. Flows without trigger-order values follow Salesforce’s documented ordering rules, including activation date where applicable. See Salesforce’s flow run-order documentation.
Use ordering when one flow must precede another. It will not stop an after-save flow from issuing a needless second update, nor will it make broad entry criteria safe. Those issues require a design or criteria change.

Duplicate business records
If two records represent the same person, enrollment, transaction, or other real-world item, prevent the duplicate at the data-quality layer rather than treating it as recursion. Salesforce’s before-save data-quality example shows blocking a duplicate enrollment with a custom error. That is different from preventing an automation pass from re-entering.

Process Builder re-evaluation
Salesforce documents that Process Builder’s “only when specified changes are made” criteria can evaluate more than once during recursive re-evaluation within a transaction: each pass uses that pass’s prior values. If repeated actions originate in a legacy process, inspect its recursive path and consider moving the behavior into a deliberately scoped flow. See Salesforce’s Process Builder recursion guidance.
Apex trigger re-entry
Salesforce documents a case where workflow rules update a field and a trigger fires again when that field actually changes. Its Apex trigger guidance discusses static variables for that Apex-specific scenario. Do not assume a static variable is a general fix for flow recursion; use meaningful change checks and a design suited to the automation involved.

The message “Maximum number of duplicate updates in one batch (12 allowed)” refers to a documented scenario involving a flow with a Wait step. Repeated bulk updates can create multiple flow interviews and duplicate scheduled actions for the same record. The 12 figure belongs to this error scenario; it is not a universal Salesforce record-update limit. Salesforce’s error article, published June 19, 2026, recommends more specific flow entry criteria and avoiding repeated updates of the same record in one bulk operation.

For this error, inspect whether the bulk operation updates the same record repeatedly and whether each update starts another interview that reaches the Wait element. Tightening criteria can prevent interviews that do not need to be scheduled; reducing repeated updates in the bulk operation addresses the other part of the documented cause.
When a single Flow entry point is not enough
Flow bulkifies automatically, but Salesforce’s architecture guidance notes that separate flow triggers and repeated invocations do not share state. For complex automation, compare the number of entry points, cross-object operations, bulk behavior, custom error-handling needs, and whether transaction-scoped state or deduplication is necessary. Flow is often suitable for declarative automation; Apex can provide more control when those requirements demand it. The choice should follow the behavior and transaction needs, not a blanket rule that all recursion requires Apex.
