Use a VPN when you need an encrypted tunnel for private-network access or want to route a wider range of device traffic through your server. Use a proxy when compatible applications or protocols need to send selected traffic through an intermediary. A proxy cannot compress arbitrary end-to-end encrypted HTTPS content while it remains encrypted, so “compressing proxy” does not automatically mean smaller transfers.

What is the difference between a self-hosted VPN and a proxy?

A self-hosted VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between a client and a server, then routes traffic according to the connection’s configuration. OpenVPN describes Access Server as a self-hosted business VPN that can run on Linux, containers, virtual appliances, cloud infrastructure, or a physical server. Its product page describes both private remote access and routing internet traffic through the server; those are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent security assessment. “Proxy” is a broader label. A forward proxy typically handles traffic from applications configured to use it, but proxy designs vary. Cloudflare describes its managed Privacy Proxy as a MASQUE forward proxy that supports TCP and UDP through HTTP CONNECT and CONNECT-UDP. IETF RFC 9484 defines proxying IP packets over HTTP and lists remote-access VPNs, site-to-site VPNs, and general-purpose packet tunnelling as use cases. So a proxy is not necessarily limited to application-level TCP traffic; check the exact proxy type and supported protocols. Cloudflare Privacy Proxy · IETF RFC 9484

Can a proxy compress HTTPS traffic?

Only if the proxy can access data in a form its compressor understands. With end-to-end HTTPS, a transit intermediary sees encrypted content, not the HTTP response body, and therefore cannot compress that body. If a proxy terminates TLS and establishes a separate encrypted connection onward, it can process plaintext—but it also becomes part of the trust boundary for that decrypted traffic. The proxy operator and its configuration then matter to confidentiality.

Whether compression saves bandwidth also depends on the content: already-compressed or otherwise poorly compressible data may yield little benefit. The cited sources do not provide a measured savings figure for a self-hosted compressing proxy compared with a VPN, so there is no grounded general percentage or speed winner to report.

When can compression create a security risk?

Encryption does not by itself eliminate every risk from compression. IETF RFC 9114 explains that an attacker may recover secret data when confidential and attacker-controlled data are compressed in the same context. The attack can use changes in ciphertext length across requests to infer information. The standard advises against compressing such mixed content unless separate compression contexts are used. This warning applies to that specific threat model; it is not a claim that all compression is unsafe. IETF RFC 9114, section 10.6

Which should you choose?

Your need Better starting point What to verify
Encrypted access to a private network VPN Which private routes the client can reach, and whether traffic uses split-tunnel or full-tunnel routing.
Route a broad set of device traffic through a controlled server VPN Which traffic actually enters the tunnel and what metadata the server can see.
Send traffic from selected compatible apps or protocols through an intermediary Proxy Protocol support, client compatibility, and whether the proxy handles plaintext or only encrypted transport.
Reduce transfer size for web content Neither by default Whether the proxy can access plaintext, whether the content is compressible, and whether TLS termination is acceptable.

Before choosing, compare coverage, supported protocols, trust boundaries, client compatibility, deployment and maintenance work, and performance with your own traffic mix. The available sources do not offer a neutral, comparable proxy-versus-VPN performance benchmark.

Can you use a proxy and a VPN together?

In some configurations, yes. OpenVPN Connect documents how to assign a proxy configuration to a VPN connection profile. That is an implementation-specific example, not evidence that every VPN client and proxy can be combined. Check the documentation for your client and confirm how traffic is routed through the two layers. OpenVPN Connect: apply a proxy configuration to a connection profile

What does self-hosting require?

A self-hosted service needs a compatible deployment environment and ongoing administration. OpenVPN says Access Server can be deployed on a physical server or in cloud infrastructure. The cited material does not establish minimum hardware requirements or show that a small home server is preferable to an existing server or cloud instance. Choose infrastructure based on the software’s requirements, expected traffic, network capacity, and your ability to maintain it. OpenVPN Access Server
