A compressing proxy reduces web page bytes by serving a more compact HTTP representation—usually by compressing text such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, or converting an existing representation to another supported encoding. It cannot generally rewrite a page carried inside an ordinary end-to-end HTTPS tunnel, and it usually cannot make already-compressed images, audio, video, or archives meaningfully smaller.
How does a compressing proxy reduce web page size?
Compression takes advantage of redundancy: repeated words, markup, code patterns, and other data can often be represented with fewer bytes. HTTP content compression applies a coding such as gzip or Brotli to a representation for delivery. This is distinct from compression built into a file format and from compression applied only across a particular network link.
In typical HTTP content negotiation, the client sends an Accept-Encoding request header listing the codings it can decode. The server or intermediary selects a suitable representation and identifies its coding in the response’s Content-Encoding header. A cache may store different representations for the same URL, so it should vary its response based on Accept-Encoding to avoid serving a representation the client did not request or cannot decode. MDN Web Docs explains these HTTP compression mechanisms.
A reverse proxy or CDN positioned to process the HTTP response can compress uncompressed origin content, pass through an already-compressed representation, or decompress and recompress it using a different coding. If it changes the body, it must keep the representation metadata and response behavior consistent with the changed content.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which files compress well—and which usually do not?
| Content | What to expect from another general-purpose compression pass |
|---|---|
| HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other text | Often worthwhile because repeated structure and strings can be represented more compactly. |
| Images, audio, and video already encoded in compressed formats | Usually little or no reduction; a second pass can sometimes make the result larger. |
| ZIP archives and JPEG images | Familiar examples of already-compressed data, so further general-purpose compression is usually ineffective. |
These are tendencies, not guarantees for every file. MDN notes that text can have substantial redundancy and cites size reductions of up to 70% for some documents as an example. That figure is not a promised saving for a particular site, asset, proxy, or configuration.
Eligibility also depends on the proxy’s rules. As one vendor-specific example, Cloudflare’s documentation lists HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other text-oriented media types for delivery compression. It documents minimum response sizes of 48 bytes for gzip and 50 bytes for Brotli and Zstandard. Under those documented rules, successful responses are compressed only for status 200; error responses are compressed only for status 403 or 404. These are Cloudflare rules, not universal HTTP requirements.

Can a proxy compress HTTPS traffic?
An ordinary HTTP proxy commonly uses the CONNECT method to establish a tunnel for HTTPS. RFC 9110 describes a tunnel as a blind relay that forwards data between connections without changing the messages. TLS protects the HTTP exchange inside that tunnel, so the proxy cannot ordinarily read or rewrite the encrypted page body.
A different arrangement is possible when an intermediary terminates TLS and establishes a separate protected connection onward. In that case it can process the HTTP content between those connections, but it is an endpoint in the protected connection rather than a blind tunnel relay. This changes the trust model: the intermediary must be trusted with the content it can now access. It should not be described as transparent compression that preserves end-to-end TLS between the browser and origin.

How much data does proxy compression save?
There is no universal saving percentage. Results depend on the page’s mix of text and media, the compression coding and settings, the proxy’s eligibility rules, and whether the origin has already compressed the response. A text-heavy response may shrink substantially; a page dominated by JPEGs or video may change very little. MDN’s “up to 70%” example describes some documents, not an expected result for every page.
When assessing a particular proxy, check which codings it negotiates with clients, what content types, response statuses, and minimum sizes qualify, whether it passes through or converts existing encodings, how HTTPS is handled, and whether caches distinguish encoding variants. Those details determine what actually reaches a given client; the label “compressing proxy” alone does not.
