Yes—if you mean the original Final Fantasy (FFI), getting access to the airship lets you revisit previous areas. The exact landing rules depend on the version, and other games in the series use different airship systems.
What the airship lets you do in the original Final Fantasy
Square Enix says that gaining access to the airship opens up the world, allowing both further story progression and the freedom to revisit previous areas. In FFI, the airship is buried on the overworld; you need the levistone to reach it. The levistone is the prerequisite for finding the airship, while access to the airship is what opens up return travel. Square Enix explains the airship’s role in FFI, and its January 2022 feature describes the levistone prerequisite.

Where the NES airship can land
Revisiting areas does not mean the NES airship can land on every overworld tile. The NES instruction manual says to watch the airship’s shadow to tell whether it can land, and specifies that it can land only on open plains. You can fly broadly around the overworld, but landing is terrain-limited. This restriction is documented for the NES release; do not assume the manual’s wording applies identically to every remake. Nintendo’s NES instruction manual gives the landing rule.
Why the answer can differ in other Final Fantasy games
“Final Fantasy” may refer to the original game or to the series as a whole, and airship travel is not one uniform mechanic. For example, Square Enix says that in Final Fantasy XII, free travel around the world becomes available after obtaining a new skystone for the Strahl. That is a different unlock condition from simply gaining access to the FFI airship. The available official examples establish that travel systems vary, not a complete revisit rule for every numbered entry. Square Enix’s airship feature discusses differences across games.

What to take from this
- Original Final Fantasy: Yes, the airship opens up the world and lets you revisit previous areas.
- NES version: It can land only on open plains, so flying access is not the same as landing anywhere.
- Another series entry: Check that game’s specific airship unlock and travel rules; FFI’s answer does not automatically apply.
