A color e-reader is usually the better choice for focused reading, especially novels and books, while a tablet is better when you need broad app access, interactive content, or a more versatile screen. For comics, magazines, and PDFs, the best option depends on whether the pages are actually in color and how comfortably they fit on the screen.
How the screens differ for reading
A color e-reader uses a reflective E Ink screen rather than the kind of conventional tablet display chosen for general-purpose apps and media. E Ink is designed to be readable under ambient light and can provide a paper-like reading experience. A tablet prioritizes a versatile screen for apps, video, and interactive content. No single display is best for every reader or every document.
Color E Ink also makes a resolution trade-off. Kobo lists the 7-inch Libra Colour at 300 pixels per inch (ppi) for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color content (Kobo Libra Colour specifications). The lower color resolution matters most for colored illustrations, fine detail, and small text within images; it does not mean monochrome text is listed at the same lower density.
What kind of reading do you do?
Novels and mostly text-based books
For novels and other text-heavy books, a dedicated reader’s reading controls and typography can be more useful than a general-purpose device. Comics, illustrated books, and magazines
A color e-reader can show color when the source page is designed in color, but it does not add color to a monochrome page or image. Kobo explicitly notes that black-and-white source material stays black and white (Kobo: About the colour screen). Before choosing a device for comics or magazines, check a sample of the specific title: page dimensions, small lettering, color detail, and whether the layout works on a 7-inch screen all affect the experience.
A tablet may suit color-heavy or interactive material better if its screen and apps fit the content. But “tablet” covers devices with different screen sizes and display specifications, so there is no single tablet comparison that applies to every model.

PDFs and fixed-layout pages
PDFs, scans, and fixed-layout publications may not reflow when you change font size. Their usefulness therefore depends on whether the page fits legibly on the screen or requires frequent zooming and panning. Compare the actual files you plan to read on the candidate device rather than assuming that a color display alone solves layout problems.
Where apps and library access matter
A tablet is the stronger fit if your reading depends on several apps or if you also want one device for non-reading tasks. Kobo’s category comparison says tablets support a wider range of apps than Kobo e-readers (Kobo’s April 10, 2024 announcement). Check that the device supports the particular bookstore, library, document, or annotation apps in your workflow before buying.

There are also e-paper devices with more app flexibility. BOOX describes the Go Color 7 as a 7-inch Kaleido 3 color e-reader with Android 12, Google Play Store access, and support for third-party apps. Its listed resolution is 300 ppi for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color, with 4,096 colors (BOOX Go Color 7 specifications). It remains an E Ink reader, not a conventional LCD tablet; broader app access does not change the screen’s underlying trade-offs.
Reading controls, lighting, and annotation
Dedicated reading features can make a difference if you read for long stretches or prefer physical controls. The Libra Colour includes page-turn buttons, rotation, font and margin customization, and ComfortLight PRO front lighting (Kobo Libra Colour specifications). It also supports the Kobo Stylus 2 for handwriting and annotations, but the stylus is sold separately (Kobo’s April 10, 2024 announcement).

Whether a device feels comfortable depends on more than display category: screen size, weight, grip, lighting, text settings, and your own reading conditions all matter. The cited product information describes display and lighting features, not independent clinical evidence that color e-readers or tablets are categorically safer or more comfortable for everyone’s eyes.

Kobo claims up to 40 days per charge for the Libra Colour, based on 30 minutes of reading per day with the front light at 30% and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off (Kobo Libra Colour specifications). This is a manufacturer estimate under those stated conditions, not a guarantee for a different routine. The available specifications do not establish a like-for-like runtime comparison with tablets, so consider how often you read, how much lighting and wireless connectivity you use, and how often you are willing to charge.
