Quantum pseudorandomness can help researchers test whether a quantum device has noise properties relevant to error correction. In the work most directly connected to this question, exact unitary designs provide controlled ensembles for higher-order randomized benchmarking. The resulting measurements can diagnose noise; they do not encode information, correct errors, or by themselves demonstrate better logical error rates.
What does quantum pseudorandomness mean here?
In this context, pseudorandomness refers to carefully constructed ensembles of quantum operations that reproduce selected statistical properties of the uniform distribution over all unitary operations. A unitary t-design reproduces the relevant t-th moments of that distribution. Exact unitary t-design circuits can therefore provide structured, controlled operations for experiments that would otherwise call for averaging over the full unitary distribution.
The relevant application is higher-order randomized benchmarking (t-RB). Randomized benchmarking applies sequences of operations and measures outcomes to estimate properties of a device’s noise. Using designs of higher order lets researchers probe higher-order aspects of that noise.
How can benchmarking help assess error correction?
Quantum error correction (QEC) encodes information in a way that allows errors to be detected and corrected. Benchmarking plays a different role: it characterizes device noise, which can help researchers assess whether a device has properties relevant to QEC. It is a diagnostic tool, not an error-correction procedure.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In their 2021 paper, Yoshifumi Nakata and colleagues studied second-order randomized benchmarking, or 2-RB. They report that it reveals the self-adjointness of quantum noise, a metric related to the feasibility of QEC. That connection makes pseudorandom ensembles useful: they enable a controlled measurement of a noise property that matters when evaluating error correction.
What did the study demonstrate?
- Numerical feasibility: The authors numerically demonstrated their protocol in one- and two-qubit systems. This describes the scale of the study, not a general performance guarantee.
- Experimental characterization: They used the protocol to characterize background noise in a superconducting qubit.
- A possible QEC obstacle: The authors report that interactions with adjacent qubits induce noise that may obstruct QEC.
The paper, “Quantum Circuits for Exact Unitary t-Designs and Applications to Higher-Order Randomized Benchmarking,” appeared in PRX Quantum 2, 030339, on 3 September 2021. Its results support using pseudorandomness for noise characterization relevant to QEC, not the broader claim that it has improved logical error rates.

What pseudorandomness does not do
A unitary-design ensemble is not a code, a syndrome-measurement method, or a decoder. The reported 2-RB result concerns characterization of noise and a metric associated with QEC feasibility. It does not show that pseudorandomness itself corrects errors or that using it has improved QEC outcomes.

“Pseudorandomness” also appears in cryptography, including the phrase “pseudorandom error-correcting codes.” That is a separate use of the terminology. The cryptographic construction should not be conflated with unitary-design-based benchmarking of quantum-device noise; the available evidence does not establish that the cryptographic work is quantum or that it is the construction meant in this QEC context.
