You can use modern JavaScript without abandoning older browsers, but compiling your code is only one part of compatibility. Set a clear browser support policy, check each feature against that policy, transform unsupported syntax, handle missing APIs separately, and test the production build in the browsers you promise to support.

Start by deciding which browsers you support

“Older browser” has no universal cutoff. Set your minimum browser versions using audience analytics, product commitments, accessibility needs, and business requirements. Google’s modern web guidance recommends considering actual audience browser use and notes that legal or business requirements may affect the decision; it is a general framework, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

Write the supported browsers and minimum versions into the project’s policy. That list determines what you need to compile, polyfill, and test. Supporting older or less common environments can add code and maintenance work, so base the policy on a real need rather than a vague wish to “support everything.” Revisit it when audience data or product commitments change.

Check the exact feature, not just the language version

Compatibility varies by feature and browser version. Check each JavaScript syntax feature, built-in, and browser API against your support policy. MDN’s Browser Compatibility Data provides machine-readable information about JavaScript and web platform features. MDN cautions that this low-level data can change as browsers ship features, standards evolve, and bugs are found.

Baseline is another useful guide to interoperability across major browser engines. Its statuses distinguish limited availability, newly available interoperability within the most recent 30-month window, and widely available interoperability after at least 30 months. The core browser set described by the project includes Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Baseline helps assess broad interoperability; it is not a substitute for checking any older browser or version your own support policy includes. Check the current status of the specific feature when making the decision.

Transform unsupported syntax for your targets

A syntax compiler rewrites language constructs that your targets cannot parse. Babel’s @babel/preset-env uses declared target environments and compatibility mappings to select transforms. Keep those targets intentional and review them; a compiler cannot infer your product’s support promise.

Defaults can change between major versions. Babel’s June 16, 2026 release announcement says Babel 8’s preset-env follows Browserslist defaults, which was roughly ES2023 at the time of the announcement, and that this moving target changes as browsers update. Babel 8 no longer compiles to ES5 by default. If your project must run in ES5-era browsers, specify those targets explicitly. Babel says it can still compile to ES5, and to ES3 for some features, when you define the targets.

Babel 8 also changes build-time requirements: it requires ESM and a newer Node.js version for the build environment. Those requirements concern the tooling that builds your application; they are separate from the browser target you configure for the output.

Handle missing built-ins and browser APIs separately

Syntax transforms do not create runtime capabilities. A compiler may rewrite syntax, but it cannot make a missing method, browser API, or device capability exist. First identify what is missing, then choose the narrowest appropriate response:

  • JavaScript built-in: Add a polyfill for the specific built-in required by your targets. Babel can map targets to core-js polyfill modules. Check core-js documentation and compatibility information to select the relevant modules rather than shipping unrelated polyfills.
  • Browser API: Use a suitable API polyfill or an alternate implementation where one exists. If neither is practical, detect support and omit or adapt the enhancement.
  • Optional enhancement: Keep the core task usable without the capability, then enable the improved experience in browsers that support it. This progressive-enhancement approach avoids making an optional feature a prerequisite for basic use.

Polyfill support depends on the library version, so verify its current policy before relying on it for very old engines. The core-js v4 documentation says that version no longer supports very old engines such as IE10 and below, and directs those cases to core-js v3.

Account for modules and dependency behavior

Native JavaScript module support does not by itself guarantee that imports will load. Browsers need a way to resolve module specifiers; for example, a bare specifier requires an import map in the browser. An unresolved specifier causes an error even if the browser understands module syntax.

If your support policy includes browsers that cannot use your module-loading setup, choose a bundled or alternate script strategy for those targets. Also check dependencies: a dependency may use newer syntax or APIs than your application code, so the final build—not just your source files—must match your target policy.

Test the production build in your supported browsers

Compatibility data helps you plan, but only testing the output can show whether the shipped bundle and its dependencies work in the environments you support. Test the production build, including the fallback path, in the oldest browser versions on your list and representative mobile environments where relevant.

  1. Build for the declared targets. Confirm that the production build uses the intended Babel and polyfill configuration.
  2. Exercise real user flows. Test the new feature and its fallback in the browsers most likely to expose a gap.
  3. Check runtime behavior. Look for parse errors, missing methods or APIs, module-resolution failures, and behavior differences not caught by compilation.
  4. Recheck when dependencies or targets change. A compatibility result can change as browsers, libraries, and build-tool defaults evolve.

MDN’s Browser Compatibility Data project lists browser compatibility testing and analysis tools in its ecosystem and acknowledges services including BrowserStack, Sauce Labs, and LambdaTest as contributors. A testing service is optional; choose validation methods that cover the browsers your team has actually committed to support.

Choose an approach based on the risk

Project situation What to prioritize
Modern evergreen-browser audience Declare the supported versions, check feature compatibility, and avoid adding transforms or polyfills that do not serve that audience.
Older browser versions are a stated requirement Set explicit compiler targets, identify missing built-ins and APIs separately, and test the oldest supported versions.
Embedded browsers or webviews are in scope Check the actual environments and versions your users have; do not assume a broad browser label guarantees the needed features.
A feature is useful but not essential Detect support and preserve the core experience when the enhancement is unavailable.

There is no universal best mix of transforms and polyfills. The right choice depends on the browser floor, the type of feature, fallback quality, payload and maintenance costs, and your ability to validate the target matrix. These are project trade-offs, not measured performance results.
