How do I add alt text to a Threads image post?
Meta’s July 2023 launch announcement said Threads included Instagram accessibility features such as screen-reader support and AI-generated image descriptions, which could be edited before publishing. That is a statement about the launch-era experience, not confirmation of today’s controls on every platform. Meta’s Threads API documentation separately lists an alt_text field for an image; an API field does not tell you how to add or edit a description in the consumer app.
Exact current steps for iOS, Android, and web are not established by these sources. If you see an image-description or alt-text control while composing a post, use it to add or review the description; do not assume that the interface, defaults, or availability are identical across versions or devices.

Does Threads automatically add alt text?
Meta’s launch announcement described AI-generated image descriptions as an Instagram accessibility feature enabled on Threads, with descriptions editable before publishing. It does not establish whether Threads currently generates descriptions, whether they are on by default, or how a screen reader presents them in the consumer apps. Treat any generated description as something to review when the interface allows: automated wording may omit context that makes the image meaningful in your post.
What should I write in alt text for a Threads post?
Write a concise description that communicates what matters about the image in the context of your post. W3C guidance requires text alternatives for non-text content; the goal is to give readers who cannot see the image access to its relevant meaning, not to inventory every visible detail. Identify a person or object when relevant, describe the action or relationship, and include context needed to understand why the image matters.

For a photograph
Describe the subject and meaningful action or setting. For example, if the post announces a volunteer cleanup, describe volunteers collecting litter along a riverbank rather than listing every object in the frame.
For a text-heavy graphic
Put important wording—such as a quotation, instructions, or event details—in ordinary post text or an available text-attachment format when practical. Keep an image description as well; it can identify the graphic and communicate its purpose, while the text gives readers the actual wording without requiring them to inspect the image.

For a chart or complex visual
Give the image a brief description, then explain the key takeaway and relevant data in post text or another available text format. A short alternative alone may not convey all the information in a dense chart or infographic.
For a multi-image post
Check each image individually and provide a useful description for each where the interface permits. This is an authoring recommendation; the sources cited here do not verify current carousel-specific description controls.

W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 generally favors text instead of an image of text when the same presentation can be achieved with text. If the wording is essential, make it available as text rather than relying on a reader to zoom or interpret the picture.

WCAG 2.2 sets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and images of ordinary text, and 3:1 for large text and images of large text, subject to the guideline’s stated exceptions. These are accessibility benchmarks from W3C, not evidence that Threads checks or enforces contrast in uploaded images.

- Use text large enough to read, and place it over a relatively simple background rather than a visually busy area.
- Check the contrast between the text and the background directly behind it; a photo that changes from light to dark may make the same text difficult to read in different areas.
- Do not assume readers can enlarge text that is baked into a raster image. WCAG’s text-resizing guidance concerns text presentation; it does not make embedded image text selectable or resizable.

Can a Threads text attachment replace an image description?
No. Meta announced in 2025 that Threads posts could include up to 10,000 characters of attached text to convey longer perspectives. That can provide space for an image’s essential wording, chart explanation, or additional context, but it does not itself describe the image for someone using a screen reader. Use text attachments as a complement to an image alternative, not a substitute for one. See Meta’s announcement about attaching text to Threads posts.
