Before installing a Figma plugin, inspect its Community listing for a reviewed security disclosure and declared network access, then check whether its data use makes sense for its stated purpose. Treat those details—and Figma’s review—as useful screening, not a guarantee: plugins are third-party code that can access user and file information.

Why a Figma plugin deserves a safety check

The Figma Help Center warns: “Plugins run third-party code and can access user and file information for their plugin actions.” Depending on the plugin and its actions, accessible information can include usernames, user IDs, avatars, cursor position, visible editor bounds, selected-object IDs, and all layers in a file. Plugin APIs also provide read and write access to files. Figma’s guidance on using plugins in files describes this access.

That access may be necessary for a plugin to do its job—for example, a tool that modifies a design needs to interact with file content. The important question is whether the information and network access involved fit the function you want to use.

Check the Community listing before installing

  1. Confirm the plugin and its stated purpose. Read the description and check that it clearly explains what the plugin does. Figma’s Community guidelines call for accurate descriptions and prohibit hidden functionality.
  2. Look for “Data security info available.” When a developer submits a security disclosure and Figma reviews and accepts it, logged-in users can view it from the Community listing. Read the answers rather than treating the label as a badge that proves safety. The disclosure program is voluntary, so if the label is absent, the listing does not provide that reviewed information; absence alone does not establish that the plugin is unsafe or safe. Figma explains how plugin security information is shared.
  3. Inspect network access and listed domains. Compare any declared domains with the plugin’s purpose. Figma says a plugin can access any domain by default when network access has not been defined. If a domain appears unrelated, ask the developer why it is needed.
  4. Read what the disclosure says about data leaving Figma. Check whether the plugin sends personally identifiable information or Figma-derived data to an external service, stores information derived from Figma APIs, uses its own backend, or requires authentication. Look for a clear account of what is sent, where it is stored, and who can access it.
  5. Check account, payment, and licensing requirements. The listing should make clear if you need a separate account, must pay extra, or will share data with a third party. If an apparent requirement is not explained, contact the developer before proceeding.
  6. Apply your organization’s approval process. If you are working with company or sensitive files, check whether your organization requires plugin approval before use.
  7. Pause if important questions remain unanswered. Contact the support channel listed by the developer or ask your administrator. Do not rely on a Community listing alone as assurance that a plugin is suitable for a sensitive file.

What a security disclosure can—and cannot—tell you

Figma describes plugin security disclosures as voluntary and says a disclosure must be reviewed and accepted before logged-in users can view it on the listing. Treat a specific, relevant disclosure as information for assessing the plugin, not as a public code audit. It reflects what the developer disclosed and does not by itself prove how every version of the plugin behaves.

Figma’s disclosure principles recommend using HTTPS for external requests and limiting network access to the domains the plugin needs. They also call for transparency when a plugin sends personally identifiable information or Figma-derived data outside Figma, including explaining external storage and who can access it. The principles favor avoiding storage of data derived from Figma APIs or using Figma-provided storage instead. These are useful standards against which to assess the disclosure and frame questions; they do not independently establish that a plugin follows them. See Figma’s disclosure guidance.

How much does Figma’s review guarantee?

Figma reviews Community plugins before listing them. Its review guidelines cover quality, trust and safety, business, and legal considerations, and say Figma may reject plugins that read or modify a file without the user’s explicit awareness and consent or fail to adequately protect customer data. However, Figma also says manual review is for minimum functionality and does not guarantee that every plugin is usable or that all policy-violating plugins will be blocked. Review is a baseline screen, not a safety certification or warranty. Figma’s Community guidelines describe its review standards and limitations.

For company and sensitive files, involve an administrator

Organization and Enterprise administrators can require approval before members use plugins. Enterprise also offers workspace-level plugin management options. Follow your organization’s process before using a plugin with work files, even if the listing includes a disclosure. Figma’s plugin-access guidance for organizations explains the controls.

If you are comparing plugins for the same task

Compare each plugin against the same practical questions rather than relying on popularity or usage counts, which do not establish security.

What to do when the listing leaves gaps

Ask the developer what information the plugin accesses, why each external domain is needed, whether data leaves Figma, and whether it is stored or shared. Figma’s guidelines make developers responsible for providing user support. If the answers are unavailable or do not resolve your concerns, do not run the plugin on a sensitive file; ask your organization’s administrator about an approved alternative or whether the plugin can be used under your organization’s rules.
