If an SFX power supply gets loud or hot, first check when the sound occurs and whether airflow is blocked. Inspect only the outside of the unit. Shut down and unplug the PC if the PSU repeatedly trips, smells burnt, has damaged cables or a damaged fan, or becomes abnormally hot. Never open a PSU or keep stress-testing one that may be failing.

First, identify the sound and when it happens

With the case closed, note whether the sound is a soft rush of air, a rattle or grind, or a high-pitched electrical buzz. Also note whether it starts at power-on, happens only during gaming or rendering, or continues at idle—and whether the PC has shut down or become unstable.

A PSU fan can speed up as temperature and load rise, and some models stop the fan under certain conditions. Behavior varies by exact model and revision: CORSAIR’s current SF guide has separate fan-noise-curve sections for the SF750, SF850, and SF1000. Check the manual or support information for your PSU rather than assuming a stationary fan is faulty or that every stopped fan is normal: CORSAIR SF Series manual and quick-start guide.

Check the PSU’s external airflow safely

  1. Shut down and unplug the computer. Do not put your hands or objects near a running fan.
  2. Check the intake and exhaust. Make sure the PSU is not pressed against a case panel, carpet, wall, cable bundle, or dust filter that obstructs airflow. In a compact case, confirm that the fan faces the intended opening or air path specified by the case and PSU manuals.
  3. Look at accessible exterior grilles. Dust at a grille can impede airflow. If cleaning is appropriate, follow the PSU maker’s directions and keep it external. Fractal Design recommends clearing dust from the fan grille with compressed air in its support article, but that article was modified in 2014 and is not permission to open the PSU: Fractal Design: noisy power supply, fan noise and coil whine.

Cooler Master’s July 2024 SFX Gold guide warns against opening the PSU and inserting objects into its spinning fan. Do not disassemble the unit or try to stop the fan with an object: Cooler Master SFX Gold 550/650/750/850 user guide (PDF).

Tell fan noise apart from electrical buzzing

  • Airflow hiss that rises with load: may reflect the fan responding to heat or load. Compare the behavior with the fan-control information for your exact PSU.
  • Rattle, scrape or grinding: can indicate a mechanical fan issue, especially if it is new, persistent, or suddenly louder. Seek manufacturer or reseller support instead of opening the unit.
  • High-pitched buzz: may be electrical noise, often called coil whine, rather than fan noise. Fractal Design notes that it can arise from interactions between a PSU and graphics-card voltage-regulator modules and may occur only with certain load combinations. If the PC otherwise works normally, note which workload triggers it and ask the PSU or component maker for advice. The sound alone does not establish that the PSU is failing.

Fractal’s suggestions about power-saving or graphics settings apply to its products; they are not guaranteed fixes for every PSU or PC. Do not change power settings without understanding their effects.

Know when to stop using the PC

Shut down and unplug the PC rather than gaming or stress-testing if any of these warning signs appear:

Apevia SFX-AP500W Mini ITX Solution/Micro ATX/SFX 500W Power Supply
  • Compact Power Solution: APEVIA SFX-AP500W 500W Power Supply designed for Mini ITX Solution, Micro ATX, and SFX form factor systems
  • Comprehensive Connector Options: Includes 1 x 20+4pin Main Power, 1 x 8pin 12V(P4+4), 1 x 6/8pin PCIe, 3 x SATA, and 2 x 4pin Molex connectors for versatile compatibility
  • Space-Saving Dimensions: Measures 125mm x 100mm x 63.5mm (4.9 inches x 3.94 inches x 2.5 inches) - L x W x H, designed for small form factor builds
  • Proper Installation Required: The power supply will not power on simply by connecting the power cord to both the power supply and wall outlet. Ensure that all the power supply cables are properly connected to the PC for it to power on
  • Flexible CPU Power Connection: The 8pin CPU connector can be split apart to become a 4+4 by pushing one end of the 4pin down and the other end of the 4pin up for motherboards that require a 4pin power
  • The PSU repeatedly trips or shuts the system down.
  • The fan is visibly damaged, or it does not run when the exact model’s control behavior calls for it.
  • You notice a burnt smell, visible cable damage, or moisture exposure.
  • The unit becomes abnormally hot, or develops sudden, persistent grinding or rattling.

Contact the manufacturer or reseller for an assessment. CORSAIR says its over-temperature protection shuts down a PSU when an internal temperature set point is reached, usually because of internal overload or fan failure. That protection is a safety response, not a reason to continue operating the unit. Warranty coverage and assessment depend on the model, revision, region, and purchase date; Fractal’s guidance about referring excessive noise in a brand-new PSU to the reseller describes its own approach, not a universal policy.

What to compare if you need a replacement

“SFX power supply” is a category search, not a guarantee that a particular unit suits your build. Compare the exact model documentation against the case and the components you will power.

What to check Why it matters
Form factor and clearance Confirm SFX or SFX-L compatibility, unit depth, cable-bend room, and case bracket fit.
Power and connectors Match the unit’s continuous output to the actual CPU and GPU system, and verify native GPU connectors and cable lengths.
Thermal and acoustic design Check fan size and control mode, published fan curves or noise information, intake orientation, and case ventilation.
Efficiency, protections, warranty, and revision Read the manual and warranty page for the precise model and revision; a series name alone does not establish identical behavior.

For scale, CORSAIR lists the SF750 dimensions as 100 × 125 × 63.5 mm and provides separate noise-curve sections for the SF750, SF850, and SF1000 in its guide. Confirm current, model-specific documentation before comparing units.

One manufacturer example—not a universal recommendation—is be quiet!’s SFX Power 3 450W. Its product page lists SFX12V Version 3.42, 450 W continuous output, a temperature-controlled 80 mm fan, up to 33.8 dB(A), and a three-year manufacturer warranty. Those are specifications published by be quiet! on a page accessed in 2026, not independent comparative measurements. This model may not meet a higher-power build’s needs or a case’s clearance and connector requirements: be quiet! SFX Power 3 450W specifications.
