There is no single switch that controls all three. Here’s where to find the documented controls in ChatGPT and Google Search, and what each one does.
How do I see sources in ChatGPT Search?
ChatGPT Search can show citations in an answer and a Sources view, but OpenAI does not document a setting that forces citations to appear on every response. Whether sources appear depends on the response and client. To search, open a conversation and select View all tools > Search, or type / and choose Search. Enter your query and send it. ChatGPT may also search automatically when a question would benefit from current information.
When an answer includes a citation, select it to open the source. Select Sources, when that option is available, to inspect cited sources and other relevant links. For an existing answer, the refresh control may offer Try again or Search the web. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search help.
Sources and personalization are separate. If Memory is on, ChatGPT may use a relevant saved memory to rewrite a query before searching—for example, using remembered dietary needs and location to make a restaurant search more specific. That changes the query context, not a citation preference.

How do I make Google show preferred sources?
Google’s Preferred Sources lets you choose sources to emphasize in AI Mode, AI Overviews, and Top Stories. In Google Search or the Google app, select your profile icon, then go to Search personalization > Source preferences. Search for sources and select the ones you want to prefer. Google says sources that do not update regularly may not be offered. When you are signed in, saved preferences carry across browsers where you sign in. Details are in Google’s Preferred Sources help.
How do I stop personalized Google Search recommendations?
Google documents this account path: Google Account > Data & privacy > Personalization settings > Personalized Recommendations in Search services. The direct destination is google.com/search-personalization. Google says the controls are rolling out over several months, so the setting may not yet appear for every account. If it is missing, Google says Search Services History may still be managed through Web & App Activity. Signed-out users may see the older Search customization control. Consult Google’s recommendation settings help and Google’s personalization help.

Turning off Personalized Recommendations stops that recommendation personalization; it does not pause or erase Search Services History or other Google Account activity. It also does not remove saved addresses, collections, or other preferences. Location, language, device, and the current query can still shape functional results—for example, a search for “pizza near me.” If your aim is to reduce retained activity, use the separate activity and history controls and review deletion or auto-delete settings.
How do I change Google Search history and AI data settings?
Google’s Search Services History is separate from Personalized Recommendations. According to Google, it may include searches, information from sites visited with Search services, generative AI responses, general location, and—depending on settings—images, files, and audio or video from interactions. Google says this history can be used to provide, develop, and improve its services, including training generative AI models.

Google says future activity is not used to train those models when Search Services History is off, unless you provide feedback. Google also says history data is disconnected from the account before training or human review, and that it seeks permission before sharing media with service providers for human review as part of model improvement. These are Google’s descriptions of its practices, not a guarantee that no other account activity is retained or used. What personalization does Google AI Mode use?
Google says AI Mode personalization can reference saved Search Services History. Its documented Personal Intelligence feature requires users to be at least 18, with Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations enabled. Google describes a memory feature that lets users ask AI Mode to remember, forget, summarize, or update preferences; that memory experience is listed for the United States in English.

Connecting Google content apps is optional. Google says the feature begins with Workspace apps (Gmail and Calendar) and Google Photos, and that Search services are then permitted to access Workspace and Photos. Opting in therefore expands the personal context available to Search. Availability and prerequisites are detailed in Google’s AI Mode personalization help.

For a personal account, open Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says the setting applies across devices when you are signed in. It changes whether eligible new conversations can be used for model improvement; it does not delete or hide saved chats. OpenAI notes that available controls may depend on sign-in status, plan, and workspace settings. See OpenAI’s Data controls help.

Memory is a different control from model improvement: it affects how ChatGPT personalizes responses. Changing one does not mean the other has changed. Review Memory settings separately if you want to manage personalization.
When should I use ChatGPT Temporary Chat?
For a conversation you do not want added to ordinary chat history or used to create or update memories, start a new chat, select Temporary, and choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before sending the first message. Unpersonalized Temporary Chat does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins. Neither type creates or updates memories while temporary. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Saving a temporary chat converts it into a regular chat subject to the account’s usual settings. See OpenAI’s Temporary Chat help.
