Start with the shirt’s own fit and size chart
Open the product page for the exact button-down you plan to buy. Check whether it describes the cut as relaxed, loose, oversized, or something else, then use the chart for that style. Lee notes that measurements vary by style and that its chart applies to the product page being viewed: Lee size charts.
Do not assume that the same size label means the same dimensions across brands—or even across two styles from one brand. Fit words are useful clues, not standardized measurements. Forest Ink’s guide discusses fitted, relaxed, and oversized terminology, while Carhartt distinguishes loose from relaxed fits in its shirt and sweatshirt guidance: Forest Ink size guide and Carhartt size and fit guide.
Take the measurements the chart asks for
Use a flexible cloth measuring tape and follow the chart’s instructions. Guides may ask for body measurements such as chest, neck, or sleeve; measure the locations specified rather than substituting one measurement for another.

- Chest: Lee says to measure under the arms at the fullest part. Carhartt Reworked also advises measuring just under the arms and across the shoulder blades, with the tape firm and level.
- Neck: Lee’s guidance measures around the middle of the neck.
- Sleeve: Lee measures from the center back of the neck, over the shoulder, to the wrist bone.
Follow the directions on the particular product page if they differ. These are body measurements for matching a chart, not measurements of a shirt laid flat.
Compare garment measurements with a shirt you like
If the listing gives the shirt’s dimensions, use a button-down that already fits the way you want as a reference. Lay it flat and compare the corresponding points—such as half chest, shoulder width, sleeve length, and shirt length—rather than comparing size labels. Check how the seller defines each measurement. For example, Forest Ink’s oversized shirt chart gives flat garment measurements and defines chest as the width measured one inch below the armhole. That is a flat width—half the garment circumference at that point—not your body’s chest circumference. Compare like with like.
Choose between two plausible sizes
Compare the dimensions that affect how the shirt will feel and look, not only chest room. A larger size may add width, but it can also change shoulder placement, sleeve reach, and body length. Use the product’s measurements and intended cut to decide whether those changes suit you.

- Chest: Does the shirt give you the movement and ease you want?
- Shoulders: Will the shoulder seam sit where you expect, or become too wide?
- Sleeves: Will the cuffs reach comfortably without excessive length?
- Body length: Will the shirt provide enough coverage without becoming longer than you want?
There is no universal ease allowance established here for roomy button-down shirts. Spier & Mackay gives a 2.5–4-inch chest allowance and a 3.5–4-inch waist allowance in its popover shirt fit guidance; those figures belong to that brand’s popover context and should not be treated as a rule for other shirts: Spier & Mackay size chart.

If you fall between sizes, Lee recommends choosing the larger size for comfort, and Carhartt gives similar between-size advice. Treat that as a starting point, not an automatic rule: check the specific shirt’s shoulders, sleeves, and length as well as its chest measurement. If sizing up would make those dimensions too large, the smaller size may better preserve the intended silhouette.

In practice, the safest choice is the size whose actual measurements match the amount of room and coverage you want—not the one whose label sounds roomiest.
