If that does not clear the blockage, a hand drain snake or cable is a reasonable next mechanical option. Neither tool is a universal winner: the right choice depends on where the clog is and whether you can reach it.
Which should you try first?
Start with a plunger when the drain opening is accessible and you can seal the cup over it. Guidance from Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, recommends covering the overflow with a cloth where present and adding enough water to cover the plunger’s rubber cup. That helps direct the plunging action toward the drain.
Remove visible hair or debris at the opening first if you can do so safely. Avoid forcing a tool into an unfamiliar drain or removing a cover if you are unsure how it is fitted.
How to try a plunger
- Cover the sink or bath overflow with a cloth if the fixture has one.
- Position the plunger cup over the drain opening and add enough water to cover the rubber cup.
- Pump a few times, then check whether water runs away freely. Cadw does not specify a guaranteed number of plunges for every fixture.
When a drain snake is the better next step
If plunging does not dislodge the blockage, a hand drain snake or cable can reach debris farther into the drain. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s homeowner guidance names a snake or auger for clearing clogged sink drains. A snake is therefore a reasonable next mechanical option, not proof that every clog requires one.

A sink trap may also be checked if you are competent to do so. The appropriate approach depends on the fixture and drain design; the cited guidance does not establish a universally suitable cable length, tool size, or technique. For difficult or persistent blockages, consult a plumber rather than forcing the tool or dismantling plumbing you are not prepared to handle.
Plunger vs. snake: choose by the situation
| Situation | Better first choice | Why | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow or blocked sink or shower with an accessible drain opening | Plunger | Household guidance recommends plunging; covering an overflow and sealing the cup helps direct the action. | No cited source guarantees a result or sets a universal number of plunges. |
| Plunging has not cleared the blockage | Hand drain snake or cable | Homeowner guidance identifies a snake or auger as a mechanical clearing option. | Suitable tool dimensions and methods depend on the drain; no universal specification is established. |
| Hair repeatedly enters a shower or bath drain | Hair catcher for prevention | Sweden’s Chemicals Agency recommends a hair filter at the shower-floor or bathtub drain. | A filter helps prevent hair entering the drain; it does not remove an existing clog. |
| Difficult or recurring clog, or major plumbing repair | Professional assessment | HUD says major plumbing repairs should be handled by an expert plumber, and the Swedish agency advises hiring a plumber for difficult blockages. | Local rules and responsibility vary by location. |
What to know about chemical drain cleaners
Advice about chemical cleaners depends on the situation. For septic-system owners, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises avoiding chemical drain openers for a clog and suggests boiling water or a snake instead. Sweden’s Chemicals Agency recommends mechanical options such as a plunger, drain rod or cable, or trap cleaning, and advises avoiding corrosive cleaners if choosing a cleaner. These are context-specific recommendations, not evidence that every cleaner is unsafe for every drain.

When local plumbing rules matter
Rules about what homeowners may do are jurisdiction-specific. For example, the Government of Western Australia says clearing a blocked fixture or waste pipe with a plunger is a basic task permitted to a homeowner or occupier there. Its guidance says other water-supply, sanitary, and drainage plumbing work must be done by a licensed plumber or permit-holder. Do not assume that rule applies elsewhere.

Is there a proven winner?
The official guidance cited here supports trying a plunger first for an accessible clog, then considering a snake or cable if plunging fails. It does not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison or published success rates, average clearing times, or cost comparison. The practical choice is conditional: use the plunger first when you can seal it over the opening, and consider a snake when the blockage needs mechanical reach.
