What is the Shortcuts app on iPhone?
Apple describes a shortcut as a quick way to get one or more tasks done with apps. Think of it as a named workflow: each action is one step, and information returned by one step can be used by the next. Depending on what the apps and services support, a workflow might open an app, get information, or pass text or other content between steps.

Examples Apple gives include getting directions to a calendar event, moving text from one app to another, generating an expense report, and making and sending a GIF from recent photos. The Gallery in Shortcuts contains ready-made examples you can add and customize. Not every app, service, or type of content is available in every country or region.
A shortcut can stay simple—such as opening an app—or grow to include lists, variables, conditions, repeats, and web APIs. Those advanced building blocks are optional; a useful first shortcut can have only a few actions.

How do I make a shortcut on my iPhone?
- Explore the Gallery: Open Shortcuts and choose a familiar, low-stakes example. Add it, then look through its actions to see how the steps fit together.
- Create a new shortcut: In Shortcuts, start a new shortcut and give it a clear, verb-led name, such as “Open Notes” or “Send my location.”
- Add actions: Use the action browser to search for the result you want—terms such as “open,” “get,” or “send” can help. Add a small number of actions and arrange them in the order they should run.
- Configure and test: Set any options the actions request, then run the shortcut from the editor. Check what each step returns. If Shortcuts asks for access to data, read the prompt and allow only what the intended workflow needs. Fix missing inputs or permissions before adding more steps.
- Choose how to launch it: Run it from Shortcuts, or add it to a supported surface such as Siri, the Home Screen, a widget, or the share sheet. The available choices depend on the device and software version.
Apple’s Shortcuts User Guide covers the app’s actions and run options. Names and placement can change between iOS releases, so use the current guide for the version on your device.
What can I do with iPhone Shortcuts?
Useful workflows usually remove a repeated sequence of taps or move information from one place to another. For example, you might start a shortcut when you want to pass selected text to another supported app, or make a multi-step routine easier to launch. The specific actions available depend on the apps, services, and content involved.

Apple documents run surfaces including the Shortcuts app, Siri, Home Screen, widgets, share sheet, Apple Watch, Control Center, Action button on supported devices, Search, and Back Tap. These are options, not a promise that every surface appears on every iPhone or iOS release. Apple’s iPhone Shortcuts guide lists current instructions and options.
Shortcut or personal automation: what is the difference?
A regular shortcut starts when you choose to run it, such as by tapping it or asking Siri. A personal automation starts in response to an event. Apple’s guide lists triggers such as a time of day, arrival or departure, a message, a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, an app opening, battery level, or connecting a charger. The current trigger list and steps are in Apple’s guide to adding automations.

| Type | How it starts | Example | Confirmation and testing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual shortcut | You start it from a supported launch surface, such as Shortcuts, Siri, a widget, or the share sheet. | Tap a morning routine when you are ready to run it. | You initiate each run. Test it from the editor first and review any data-access prompts. |
| Personal automation | A supported event trigger starts it, such as a selected time or connection. | Run a routine at a chosen time, if that trigger is available on your device. | Some automations can run without asking, but this is not universal: confirmation depends on the trigger, and individual actions may also need to be set to run automatically. |
To begin automating, first make sure the underlying shortcut works when launched manually. Then create a personal automation for a recurring, low-risk event and check whether it asks for confirmation. Apple’s iOS 26 personal automation guide explains its version-specific flow. Automations are specific to a device: Apple says they may be backed up to iCloud but do not sync to other devices as active automations.
What should I know about privacy and unfamiliar shortcuts?
Shortcuts requests permission when a shortcut needs access to data. You can decide whether to allow access, then review or reset permissions in the shortcut’s details. Apple’s privacy settings guide explains these controls. Some shortcuts may also require a setting to share large amounts of data.

Be cautious with a shortcut shared privately by someone else. Apple warns that it cannot verify the authenticity or behavior of privately shared shortcuts. Inspect the actions before running an unfamiliar shortcut, and do not grant access unless you understand why it is needed. A familiar sender alone does not establish what a shortcut will do.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which features depend on iOS version or device?
Shortcuts’ available actions, triggers, and launch surfaces can vary by software release, device capability, language, and region. Apple’s September 2025 iOS 26 feature document describes intelligent Shortcuts actions that can summarize text, create images, or use Apple Intelligence models to return responses to a shortcut. In a June 2026 developer session, Apple described iOS 26 automation improvements, including screenshot, keyboard-connection, and notification automation types, stored values, and a Use Model action with access to Apple Intelligence models that can retrieve information from the web. These are platform-specific capabilities, not universal features; check Apple’s current compatibility guidance for your device, language, and region.
