Which phone should you choose?
Choose the Galaxy S25 for optical zoom and lighter handling
The clearest hardware advantage for zoom photography is the S25’s dedicated 10 MP telephoto camera with 3× optical zoom. That gives you a distinct lens for bringing distant subjects closer; the base Pixel 9 has no telephoto camera. Its advertised Super Res Zoom is a different, computational approach and should not be mistaken for optical telephoto hardware. Samsung’s specifications, Google’s specifications, and AT&T’s comparison list the camera differences.
The Samsung is also the more clearly documented lighter option: its published weight is 162 g. Google cautions that Pixel 9 dimensions and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process, so check the precise model sold in your region if size is decisive. Samsung’s listed 6.2-inch screen is slightly smaller than Google’s 6.3-inch Pixel display, though screen size alone does not determine how a phone feels in the hand.
Choose the Pixel 9 if you prefer Google’s phone experience
The Pixel 9 is the alternative for someone who wants Google’s own phone software and camera experience rather than Samsung’s. The available specifications establish its camera hardware and zoom approach, but they do not make megapixel counts a reliable shortcut to overall image quality.

Tom’s Guide’s launch-era sample discussion found the Pixel 9’s example daylight shots more colorful, while the S25 image looked brighter and showed more cloud definition. Treat that as one publication’s observation from sample images, not a guarantee across lighting, subjects, or every photo. Tom’s Guide comparison
Display, battery, and performance: what the specifications do—and do not—tell you
Displays: both reach 120 Hz
Samsung lists a 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh range for the S25; Google lists 60–120 Hz for the Pixel 9. Both therefore offer a high-refresh display, while the stated minimum differs. Those figures do not by themselves establish which screen looks better or feels smoother in everyday use. Samsung specifications; Google specifications

Battery: larger capacity is not proof of longer runtime
Google lists the Pixel 9 at 4,700 mAh typical capacity, an estimate based on testing and expected cell behavior. Samsung lists the S25 at 4,000 mAh. Capacity is not a battery-life test: actual endurance depends on more than the capacity number, and the available comparisons do not provide a controlled, same-method head-to-head endurance result. Do not choose the Pixel on the assumption that it will necessarily last longer. Google specifications; Samsung specifications
Google’s listed maximum of up to 27 W wired charging is based on using its 45 W USB-C charger, sold separately; actual results can be slower. Samsung recommends a 25 W adapter for the base S25. Check the package contents for the exact local model before buying an adapter, since what is included can depend on the regional SKU. Google specifications; Samsung specifications

Processors: compare only with matched tests
Samsung identifies the S25’s platform as Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, while the Pixel 9 uses Google Tensor G4. These names identify different hardware platforms; they are not, on their own, proof of which phone is faster or handles sustained workloads better. A performance verdict would require comparable testing. Samsung launch announcement; Tom’s Guide comparison

Both manufacturers promise seven years of support, but their terms use different starting points. Samsung specifies seven OS upgrade generations and seven years of security updates from the S25 series’ global launch date. Google’s Pixel 9 support period runs seven years from the device’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. The different wording and start dates mean you should not assume the two phones reach an identical calendar end date. Samsung’s announcement; Google’s specifications

Quick Recap
How to make the final choice
- Pick the Galaxy S25 if a dedicated 3× optical telephoto camera and a lighter published weight matter most.
- Pick the Pixel 9 if you prefer Google’s phone experience and want the model with the larger stated battery capacity—without assuming that means longer real-world battery life.
- For either phone, check exact regional model, storage, charger contents, warranty, and current same-condition price before ordering.
