Plug-in solar panels can be used in Great Britain only when the device meets the current UK requirements and the property, mounting point and socket are suitable. Before buying, check your nation’s rules and get any landlord, freeholder or building-manager approval; then confirm the electrical circuit, mount the panels securely and connect the supplied plug directly to a suitable socket. Energy Saving Trust says plug-in solar is not currently permitted for use in Northern Ireland.
What counts as plug-in solar—and what does the specification cover?
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) interim product specification describes a plug-in solar device as one or more photovoltaic (PV) modules, a grid-following microinverter, a manufacturer-supplied lead fitted with a BS 1363 plug, and a mounting system. It is designed to connect to a UK mains socket.
| Question | What the interim specification says |
|---|---|
| Where is this route currently available? | Great Britain. The government announced availability from 27 August 2026; Energy Saving Trust says the devices are not currently permitted for use in Northern Ireland. |
| What is the device limit? | Single-phase domestic devices with apparent power no greater than 800 VA. |
| How many may a household use? | One plug-in solar product per household. The specification says this limit keeps currents through the electrical connection to the consumer unit within safe levels. |
| Are batteries covered? | No. Plug-in battery systems and solar devices integrated with battery systems are excluded from this specification. |
These are limits for the specified product route, not an endorsement of every product described online as “balcony solar.” DESNZ says only devices compliant with its interim product specification can be sold and plugged in under the relevant regulatory amendment. The specification is interim: the government says it intends to develop enduring standards as evidence from deployment accumulates.
Can I install plug-in solar where I live?
Check your nation first
The consumer guidance in force when this article was prepared applies to Great Britain. England, Scotland and Wales do not necessarily have identical planning or building requirements. If you live in Northern Ireland, do not install a plug-in solar device on the basis of Great Britain guidance: Energy Saving Trust says it is not currently permitted there. Check current official guidance if the rules may have changed since this article was updated.

Get permission for the property and installation location
- If you rent: ask your landlord before buying or attaching panels.
- If you own a flat or leasehold property: check the lease and get approval from the freeholder or building manager, especially for balconies, railings, external walls, roofs and communal areas.
- If you need to drill or add an outdoor socket: obtain explicit approval before work begins.
- If the building has cladding, timber balconies or other external-wall fire-safety considerations: consult the responsible building manager before deciding where or how to mount the panels. The definition of a higher-risk building varies between UK nations.
- Insurance: ask your buildings and contents insurer whether an outdoor installation is covered.
Check planning requirements
Energy Saving Trust says England has introduced a Permitted Development Right intended to make plug-in solar easier on houses. In Scotland and Wales, check the applicable local requirements rather than assuming the English rule applies. For a listed building or a property in a conservation area, ask the local authority or planning office before installation.
Is the site suitable for panels?
Sunlight and orientation
Energy Saving Trust recommends an unshaded, south-facing position. East- or west-facing panels can work but generate less; north-facing or shaded locations are not recommended in its guidance. The result at any particular home depends on its orientation, shade and other site conditions.

Mounting surface and wind
Use a suitable frame, fixing or anchor, and follow the kit manufacturer’s instructions so panels cannot shift or blow over. A garage or outbuilding roof must be able to support the panels’ weight. Do not attach them to a wooden fence without professional advice. If the strength of a roof, balcony or other support is uncertain, get a qualified professional to assess it before mounting anything. When drilling or fastening, avoid concealed pipes and cables, moisture pathways and damage to weatherproofing.
Do I have a suitable socket to plug the panels into?
The device must connect directly to a suitable mains socket using the supplied plug. Do not use an extension lead. Energy Saving Trust says the socket’s circuit should not supply lighting or hardwired appliances, such as a boiler or cooker. If there is no suitable socket where the panels will be installed, do not improvise a connection.

An outdoor socket must be weatherproof and installed by a qualified electrician. Ask a qualified electrician to check the installation if the consumer unit has older rewireable fuses, you are unsure about the wiring’s condition, a socket needs to be moved or installed, or the total panel power is above 960 W. The 960 W figure is Energy Saving Trust’s trigger for professional advice; it is not the same as the specification’s maximum of 800 VA apparent power for the plug-in device.
How to install a plug-in solar panel safely
- Confirm the device is eligible. Before purchase, check that the exact device complies with DESNZ’s interim product specification and that you are buying from a registered seller. Do not treat a marketplace description or the words “balcony solar” as proof of compliance.
- Obtain permissions and check the site. Resolve landlord, freeholder, building-manager, planning and insurer questions that apply to your property. Choose a location with suitable sunlight and a surface able to support the mounting system.
- Check the electrical connection. Confirm that a suitable mains socket is available on an appropriate circuit. If wiring, the consumer unit or socket provision is uncertain, have a qualified electrician advise before installation.
- Mount the panels as instructed. Use the compatible hardware and fixings for the specific surface. Secure the panels against movement and wind, and avoid damage to the building fabric, concealed services or weatherproofing.
- Connect the supplied lead directly. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and plug the device directly into the suitable socket. Do not use an extension lead or substitute an improvised connection.
- Register the system as directed. Energy Saving Trust tells consumers to register after installation. The precise plug-in-specific process and deadline are not established in the consumer checklist reviewed here; check current DESNZ, Energy Networks Association and local distribution network operator (DNO) instructions before relying on a registration route.
Do not open or attempt to repair the panel or inverter yourself. If the system develops a fault, report it to the manufacturer.

Do I need to register the system with my DNO?
Energy Saving Trust’s consumer checklist says to register the system after installation, so do not assume registration is optional. However, the checklist does not specify the plug-in product’s exact consumer-facing procedure or deadline. GOV.UK’s general guidance on registering energy devices describes G98 and G99 processes, but the material available here does not establish that those steps apply unchanged to this new plug-in product.
Before installation, check the current instructions from DESNZ, the Energy Networks Association and your local DNO. Follow the instructions that specifically address your device and circumstances; do not infer a form, deadline or process from general guidance if the plug-in-specific steps are not clear.

How much electricity or money will it save?
DESNZ estimated savings of up to £110 a year in its Great Britain launch announcement on 26 August 2026. That is a government estimate, not a guaranteed saving for an individual home. Actual generation and bill impact depend on the site and household; Energy Saving Trust says an unshaded south-facing location is preferred, while east- or west-facing panels generate less.
DESNZ’s 16 June 2026 electrical safety study examined representative plug-in systems using standards-based analysis, laboratory testing and simulations of UK domestic circuits under operating conditions and fault scenarios. The department reported stable behaviour, effective operation of protective devices, and no evidence of sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable thermal effects in the conditions tested. It also reported variation in export-limitation behaviour and electromagnetic compatibility. Those findings support a conditional conclusion about the tested systems—not a claim that every product, installation or fault condition is equally safe.
What to check when choosing a kit
- Evidence that the exact device complies with the current UK interim product specification and is sold by a registered seller.
- The microinverter’s rated AC output, and whether it limits or clips output from the panels.
- Whether the supplied mounting hardware suits your actual mounting surface and can secure the panels appropriately.
- Whether the supplied cable can reach a suitable direct socket without an extension lead.
- How the proposed position’s orientation and shading may affect generation.
- The manufacturer’s support, warranty and repair route, including what to do if the inverter or panel develops a fault.
- Whether the kit is integrated with a battery. Battery systems and solar devices integrated with batteries are outside the cited plug-in solar specification.
DESNZ’s consultation outcome, published on 16 June 2026 and updated on 3 September 2026, reports 466 consultation responses and says more than 85% of respondents agreed with the proposed interim product specification. Those consultation figures describe respondents’ views; they are not a product test or a guarantee about an individual kit.
