Before choosing managed Node.js hosting, verify that the service fits your app’s process model, Node.js release, build and rollback workflow, scaling behavior, state and storage needs, regions, security requirements, and realistic operating cost. Compare specific services against the same workload assumptions: a platform-as-a-service (PaaS), function service, and managed container platform offer different controls and limits, so their labels alone do not establish a fit.

1. Match the hosting model to your workload

Start by listing what the application actually runs: a long-lived web server, background worker, scheduled job, function, or containerized process. Then check whether the host supports that process and its request pattern, framework, source or image format, and required infrastructure control.

For example, DigitalOcean App Platform documents deployments from a repository or container image; Firebase Hosting can route dynamic requests to functions or containers; and Google Cloud Run is a managed container platform. These represent different deployment models, not interchangeable product labels. Review the relevant product documentation for DigitalOcean App Platform, Firebase Hosting, and Cloud Run, then verify that the exact service and region support your app’s requirements.

2. Check Node.js version support and upgrade timing

Choose a Node.js release that is in Active LTS or Maintenance LTS status, and confirm that your hosting method supports it. The Node.js release schedule says production applications should use Active LTS or Maintenance LTS releases. It also says LTS status typically guarantees critical bug fixes for a total of 30 months. Release status changes over time, so check the schedule when you plan a migration and throughout the app’s lifecycle.

Also establish how the platform selects and upgrades Node.js versions. Heroku recommends declaring the runtime version in package.json and says its buildpack support follows the Node.js support policy. A buildpack’s available runtime list can change; review Heroku’s Node.js support documentation or the chosen provider’s current runtime list, and find out how upgrades are scheduled before committing.

3. Test the build, configuration, and rollback path

Confirm that the service can run your application’s actual installation and build steps—not just a sample deployment. Check its package-manager and lockfile support, build scripts, environment-specific settings, secret injection, release process, and rollback procedure.

Heroku documents detection for npm, Yarn, and pnpm, along with build scripts, config variables, and rollback. DigitalOcean documents repository and image deployments and rollback to one of its ten most recent successful deployments. These are advertised platform features, not a guarantee that every app will build unchanged; validate the workflow with your code and configuration. See Heroku’s Node.js build documentation and DigitalOcean App Platform’s documentation.

4. Understand scaling, concurrency, and idle behavior

“Autoscaling” is not a single behavior. Identify what metric triggers scaling, whether capacity changes vertically or horizontally, whether the service can scale to zero, and what limits apply to minimum and maximum capacity. Check whether request concurrency suits your app’s latency, memory use, and state handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DigitalOcean documents CPU-based autoscaling on dedicated CPUs and HTTP-request metrics on shared or dedicated CPUs. Google says Cloud Run revisions scale in response to requests and default to zero instances when idle; minimum instances can keep capacity warm. Firebase’s comparison lists one concurrent request per Cloud Function instance versus up to 1,000 concurrent requests per Cloud Run container instance in that integration context. Those figures are specific to the documented Firebase integration and should not be generalized to every product limit. Review the current details in the DigitalOcean App Platform documentation, Cloud Run documentation, and Firebase Hosting documentation.

For each candidate, find out how bursts are handled and whether idle scale-down or cold starts are acceptable for your response-time requirements. Test concurrency against the app’s own behavior rather than assuming that a provider’s maximum is a safe setting.

5. Plan for durable state, storage, and dependencies

Map where uploaded files, sessions, queues, and database records will live. Determine whether the runtime’s local filesystem persists across restarts, deployments, and instance changes, and whether required databases, caches, and other dependencies are available in compatible regions.

Google describes Cloud Run containers as ephemeral and points customers to separate persistent-storage services. For that runtime, treat files written inside a container as temporary unless the selected service contract explicitly says otherwise. More generally, design for external durable storage and shared session or state services when the hosting model requires them. See Cloud Run’s documentation for its container model and storage guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Verify regions and network fit

Compare the regions available for the runtime, database, storage, and other dependencies. Check the full network path as well: private connectivity, outbound traffic behavior, any required fixed IP, inbound access, and where static assets are served from can all affect whether a deployment fits.

Google recommends colocating Firebase Hosting integrations with its servers and names regions for that integration. This is specific to that setup, not a universal list of regions for Node.js hosting. Verify availability for the exact runtime and each dependent service in the provider’s current documentation. See Firebase Hosting’s integration documentation.

7. Check observability, resilience, and support commitments

Make sure the service provides enough operational visibility to diagnose a failed build, slow request, or incident. Check for logs, metrics, health checks, alerts, deployment history, and a practical recovery path. Separately verify contractual commitments: feature pages alone do not establish an SLA, backup and restore coverage, support response times, or incident performance.

Google documents request and container logs, Cloud Monitoring metrics, uptime checks, and alerts for Cloud Run. DigitalOcean lists per-minute application metrics and high availability for apps running at least two containers. Treat these as documented capabilities, then check the selected service’s current terms for the commitments that matter to your app. Sources: Cloud Run documentation and DigitalOcean App Platform documentation.

8. Review security and governance controls

Check how secrets are stored and injected, who can deploy or view them, whether transport is encrypted, and which party handles operating-system and runtime patches. If your team has compliance or data-location requirements, verify them against the plan’s access controls, contractual terms, and compliance documentation—not a general product description.

Heroku documents config variables for secrets and environment-specific settings; DigitalOcean lists automatic TLS and OS patching. These examples do not establish that a particular plan meets your governance requirements. See Heroku’s Node.js documentation and DigitalOcean App Platform’s documentation, then confirm the exact controls and terms for the service you intend to use.

9. Compare full cost and operating effort

Estimate a concrete workload rather than comparing headline starting prices. Use the same assumptions for every candidate, including traffic, region, uptime, instance size and count, build resources, databases and caches, storage, network egress, logs, backups, high availability, and support tier. The sources cited here do not establish a normalized, like-for-like cost for a particular app, so use current provider calculators or quotes once those assumptions are known. Include the engineering time required to operate each deployment model: a lower service bill may not mean a lower total cost if it requires more infrastructure work.

How to compare your shortlist

Put one real service or plan in each column and compare the same app requirements in every row. Record a verifiable answer or mark a value as not stated; do not assume that a missing limit or commitment is unlimited.
