To verify an America.gov answer, open the government links attached to it and check whether the responsible agency’s current information supports the exact claim. America.gov says its AI, SI, can make mistakes or become outdated; for benefits, immigration, money, deadlines, eligibility, or application status, rely on the responsible agency—not the answer summary.
Open the source linked to the answer
America.gov says its answers are based exclusively on federal, state, and local government websites and include links to original government sources. In the answer, open the link that relates to the specific statement you need to verify. Read the agency page or document itself rather than treating the answer’s summary as confirmation. See How America.gov works.
Check whether the source supports the exact claim
Compare the source with the part of the answer that matters to you. Check the requirement, deadline, date, eligibility condition, and jurisdiction stated in the answer against the source’s wording and conditions. A link alone is not enough: the linked material needs to support the specific claim.
- Requirement: Does the source name the same documents, steps, or conditions?
- Deadline or date: Is the date current, and does it apply to your situation?
- Eligibility: Does the agency describe the same criteria and exceptions?
- Jurisdiction: Is this the federal, state, or local authority responsible for the program in question?
Confirm the agency and whether its guidance is current
Make sure the page belongs to the agency responsible for the program, then review its date and any conditions that may have changed. America.gov’s terms say answers generated with SI can be incomplete, wrong, or out of date when a program changes. The terms, updated September 8, 2026, also say the responsible agency’s determination controls. Read the America.gov Terms of Use.

If the linked source is unclear, contradictory, or appears outdated, look for the responsible agency’s current guidance or contact the agency directly. Do not assume that an America.gov answer resolves a conflict between sources.
Use the agency for consequential decisions and application status
Before acting on information that could affect money, immigration status, benefits, or a deadline, confirm it with the responsible agency’s current information. America.gov is not the agency of record: it cannot decide eligibility, approve a benefit, or change a filing. The agency’s own determination takes precedence.

America.gov also says it cannot access agency records or see applications you have submitted. It may help you find the agency’s official status-checking tool, but you must use that agency tool or contact the agency to check your application. See the America.gov FAQ.
