To connect a 10GbE NAS to a Mac or PC, make sure the NAS, computer or adapter, switch (if used), and cabling all support the intended link speed. Connect over wired Ethernet, enable a file-sharing protocol supported by both devices—usually SMB—and confirm the negotiated link rate before diagnosing slow copies. A 10GbE link is not a guarantee of 10GbE file-copy throughput: the client, NAS storage, network configuration, and file workload can all limit results.

Choose a connection that fits your setup

Use a 10GbE switch for a shared network

For a NAS and several computers or other devices, connect the NAS and client to 10GbE-capable switch ports. Every part of the path matters: the NAS interface, client network interface, switch ports, and cabling must support the target rate. A 10GbE NAS connected through a 1GbE port or intermediate device will not give the client a 10GbE link.

Connect directly to isolate a problem

A direct Ethernet connection between one computer and the NAS removes the switch from the diagnostic path. Synology recommends comparing a direct connection with the normal network; if transfers improve, investigate the switch or other network equipment. Direct connections may require product-specific IP configuration or discovery steps, so consult the NAS and operating-system documentation for your models.

Check the computer port, adapter, and cable

If the computer lacks a compatible 10GbE port, it needs a suitable adapter. Check the host connector, operating-system version, and driver support for the exact adapter before buying or configuring it. For example, QNAP lists its QNA-UC10G2T USB4 dual-port 10GbE RJ-45 adapter for compatible USB4 or Thunderbolt 3/4 hosts. Its product page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists macOS 12.7 through 15.4 and says Windows 11 requires a Marvell AQtion AQC113 driver; verify the live requirements because support can change. Cable capability depends on category and run length. Apple’s Mac 10GbE guidance lists Cat 6 for 10GbE up to 55 m, and Cat 6a or later up to 100 m. These are Apple’s stated conditions, not a guarantee for every installed cable run. QNAP lists Cat 5e, Cat 6, and Cat 6a or above as connection options for its adapter, but that does not establish that every Cat 5e installation will sustain 10GbE. Apple’s Mac Ethernet-port guidance.

Access NAS files from macOS or Windows

Enable a file-sharing protocol supported by both the NAS and computer; SMB is the usual cross-platform option. The exact steps to connect or map a share depend on the NAS brand and operating-system version, so use those products’ current instructions rather than assuming one universal menu path.

SABRENT 3X M.2 NVMe SSD & 10GbE NAS Expansion Card, PCIe 3.0 x4 (EC-PM2L)
  • THREE NVMe SSDs AND 10GbE IN ONE PCIe SLOT: Add three M.2 NVMe drives and a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port to a NAS build, homelab, server or desktop PC from a single PCIe 3.0 x4 or wider physical slot. SSDs are sold separately.
  • NO BIFURCATION, WIDE DRIVE SUPPORT: Installs in any physical PCIe x4 or larger slot with no PCIe lane splitting and no UEFI bifurcation support needed. Takes M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDs in 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths, PCIe Gen 2.0 through Gen 5.0, and supports drives of at least 8TB per slot.
  • MEASURE YOUR CLEARANCE BEFORE YOU ORDER: This is an add-in card with a pre-installed heatsink covering the M.2 slots, so it takes up more room than a bare M.2 adapter. Check that you have an open PCIe 3.0 x4 or wider physical slot and clear space around it inside your case, chassis or NAS enclosure. Compact and sealed NAS units and small-form-factor cases are often too tight for a card of this size.
  • 10GbE PORT, AND WHAT IT DOES NOT DO: The built-in Marvell-based port is a standard 10 Gigabit wired network connection, backward compatible down to 100Mbps with CAT 5e or better cabling and a compatible switch. It does NOT link straight to the M.2 slots - the drives appear to your system as ordinary NVMe SSDs, and your operating system or NAS software decides what gets shared over the network.
  • TOOL-FREE COOLING, BANDWIDTH STATED PLAINLY: A pre-installed aluminum heatsink with thermal padding keeps drives cool through sustained transfers, with no tools needed at install. Each M.2 slot runs at up to x2 PCIe 3.0 bandwidth and the whole card totals x4, so the three drives share one x4 link - built for capacity and always-on NAS work rather than single-drive peak speed.

Apple documents SMB Multichannel as a macOS capability that lets the Mac establish more than one connection to an SMB server. Depending on the server, client, and network configuration, this can increase transfer speed or provide redundancy; it does not ensure a speed increase in every setup. Apple: Use SMB Multichannel.

Troubleshoot slow transfers in a useful order

  1. Verify the negotiated link speed. Check network status on both the NAS and computer. Synology identifies 1GbE and 10GbE link values as 1000 Mbps and 10000 Mbps, respectively. If either end reports 1000 Mbps, investigate the ports, adapter, cable, and intermediate equipment before tuning SMB. Synology SMB troubleshooting.
  2. Run a repeatable wired test. Disable Wi-Fi for the test so traffic uses the intended Ethernet path. Synology recommends testing with a file of at least 5 GB and, if possible, comparing another computer. A sustained large-file copy is more informative than a tiny file, though it does not represent every workload.
  3. Bypass the switch. Test a direct NAS-to-computer connection where supported. If performance improves, check switch capability and port settings, cabling, and other devices in the path. QNAP SMB/CIFS transfer troubleshooting.
  4. Inspect and substitute the cabling. Look for damaged, sharply bent, or degraded cable and try a known-good one. Compare the resulting negotiated rate with the expected speed, taking cable category and run length into account.
  5. Keep MTU consistent. Synology gives 1500 as the default MTU and says devices accessing the NAS should use the same value if it is changed. QNAP’s jumbo-frame example sets 9000 on the adapter, NAS, and switch port. Do not change only one device; if jumbo frames cause problems or make no difference, return the path to a mutually supported setting. QNAP jumbo-frame configuration.
  6. Separate network limits from SMB and storage limits. An SMB copy result alone does not identify the cause. Where available, compare network-layer or local-disk tests with SMB behavior. Synology names CrystalDiskMark for Windows and Blackmagic Disk Speed Test for Mac as tools for testing local drive or folder behavior via SMB.
  7. Check client and NAS load. Look at client CPU and disk use, NIC driver status, and software that may affect transfers. On the NAS, check volume health, drive type and count, and RAID configuration. A large sequential file and a folder full of small files can perform differently because the work they require is different.

What transfer speed should you expect?

QNAP gives approximately 9.4 Gbit/s as a reference for 10GbE in its troubleshooting guidance. Treat that as the vendor’s approximate network-rate reference, not a promised SMB copy speed. Actual file transfers also depend on the client and NAS hardware, storage configuration, network path, and workload; the cited sources do not establish a typical result for every setup.

When comparing tests, use the same file or workload, destination, and network path where possible. A single large-file result is useful for sustained sequential transfers, but it does not predict the behavior of every application or many-small-file workload.
