Use Zonemaster to validate a DNS zone or delegation, test a zone before it is delegated, or check proposed DS records before publishing them in the parent zone. Choose DNSViz when you need a visual explanation of DNSSEC authentication and the DNS resolution path. They address overlapping but distinct troubleshooting jobs, so neither is a universal winner.
How Zonemaster and DNSViz differ
| Tool | Best suited to | What it examines or shows | Ways to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zonemaster | Broad DNS delegation and zone validation | Traces DNS from the root through the top-level domain to authoritative servers. Checks DNSSEC signatures, server accessibility, and IP addresses; IPv4 and IPv6 are queried by default in the public service. | Public web service, or project components including a CLI, engine, backend, and GUI. Project · Documentation overview |
| DNSViz | Understanding DNSSEC and resolution failures visually | Visualizes DNSSEC authentication and resolution, including zones, delegations, record sets, DNSKEY and DS records, signatures, denial-of-existence records, and detected warnings or errors. | Web-based analysis with advanced choices such as authoritative or recursive servers and different analysis perspectives. Analysis interface |
Zonemaster’s project documentation describes it as software that validates the quality of a DNS delegation. DNSViz is centered on making the authentication chain and resolution relationships visible. A list of validation results and a graph of how DNS data connects can complement each other, but they are not interchangeable views.
Choose by the DNS problem you need to answer
| Your task | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Check delegation or general zone health | Zonemaster | Its stated scope covers DNS traversal from the root to authoritative servers and a range of delegation checks. |
| Test a zone before it is delegated | Zonemaster | Its FAQ documents testing undelegated domains. |
| Check proposed DS records before adding them to the parent | Zonemaster | Its FAQ documents supplying DS records for a pre-publication test. |
| Trace where DNSSEC trust propagation or a response fails | DNSViz | Its graph links records, delegations, trust states, and detected errors. |
| Run checks locally or integrate DNS testing into a workflow | Zonemaster | The project provides CLI and other installable components, with local and Docker documentation. |
| Revisit earlier analysis results | Zonemaster is the better-documented starting point at present | Zonemaster describes test history; DNSViz currently reports that its database-backed history is unavailable. Confirm current behavior before relying on saved results. |
What Zonemaster can test
The public Zonemaster service follows DNS from the root through the TLD to a domain’s authoritative servers. It checks DNSSEC signatures and whether name servers are accessible, and it checks IP addresses. The service accepts a DNS zone rather than an individual hostname. DNSSEC checks run automatically when DNSSEC is available; IPv4 and IPv6 queries are enabled by default.
Testing before publication
You can use Zonemaster before a change reaches public DNS: its FAQ describes tests for undelegated zones and for DS records supplied before publication in the parent. This is useful when preparing a delegation or DNSSEC change, but it does not itself publish records or confirm that a registrar or registry has accepted them. Check those settings and the authoritative data as part of the change.

Running it locally
Zonemaster offers a public web interface for a basic check, as well as components that can be installed locally. The user guide covers use of the tools, and the project documents local installation and Docker use.
There is an important Docker networking caveat: the CLI guide says Docker does not have IPv6 unless it is enabled in the Docker daemon. If the environment does not support IPv6, the CLI documents the --no-ipv6 option. Without addressing that setup, a local run may not match the public service’s default IPv4-and-IPv6 checks.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
When DNSViz is the better diagnostic view
DNSViz is designed to make DNSSEC deployment and DNS resolution easier to inspect. Its visualization guide explains how the graph represents zones and delegations, resource-record sets, DNSKEY and DS records, signatures, and denial-of-existence records. Warnings and errors appear alongside relevant graph elements, helping you follow whether data is secure, bogus, or insecure and where the chain or response breaks down.
That visual context is especially helpful when a result needs explanation: rather than only seeing that a check failed, you can trace the relationships between the zone, its delegation, and the DNSSEC records involved. DNSViz also exposes advanced analysis choices, including authoritative versus recursive servers and different analysis perspectives, through its analysis interface.

DNSViz history is currently unavailable
As of 2026-10-04, the DNSViz home page says: “DNSViz is in maintenance mode, with no access to its back-end database. It can run new analyses, but cannot load historical analyses and will not save new ones to the database.” In practical terms, you can run a fresh analysis, but should not count on loading or saving database-backed history. This is a time-sensitive service notice; check the DNSViz home page before depending on that behavior.

This comparison is based on documented capabilities, not a controlled test of speed, usability, or issue-detection rates. The available sources do not establish that either tool catches every DNS problem or is universally more accurate. For consequential changes, verify findings against authoritative server data, registrar or registry settings, and the relevant DNS standards. Use Zonemaster for broad zone and delegation checks, and DNSViz when seeing the DNSSEC and resolution relationships is central to diagnosis.
