Feed potted gerberas while they are actively growing in spring and summer, using the dose and interval on the fertilizer label. For garden beds, monthly feeding during flowering is one supported option. The schedule depends on whether you use liquid, complete, or controlled-release fertilizer; do not combine these schedules.

How often to fertilize gerberas in pots

During active spring and summer growth, choose one schedule that matches your product. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) advises feeding container plants with general-purpose liquid feed at the dose and frequency on the packet. Clemson Cooperative Extension gives liquid fertilizer every two weeks as an example, or controlled-release fertilizer two to three times during the growing season. UF/IFAS likewise recommends controlled-release fertilizer two or three times per growing season, or complete fertilizer monthly.

  • Liquid fertilizer: Follow the product label; Clemson’s example is every two weeks.
  • Complete fertilizer: UF/IFAS gives monthly applications as an option.
  • Controlled-release fertilizer: Clemson and UF/IFAS give two or three applications during the growing season.

These are alternatives for different fertilizer types, not applications to stack. The label for your specific product determines its dose and repeat interval. Clemson Cooperative Extension; UF/IFAS; RHS.

How often to fertilize gerberas in garden beds

UC IPM recommends fertilizing monthly during the bloom period. UF/IFAS lists complete fertilizer monthly or controlled-release fertilizer two or three times during the growing season. A 2018 UC Cooperative Extension Colusa County newsletter gives another product-specific option: balanced general-purpose garden fertilizer monthly through the growing season, or time-release fertilizer every six to eight weeks.

  • 🍀Prevent Nutritional Deficiencies: Using this all-in-one fertilizer eliminates issues from under or over-fertilizing and ensures Gerbera plants get precisely what they need to thrive.

Use one approach appropriate to the fertilizer rather than combining intervals. Flowering and active growth periods vary with climate, so use the local growing season and the product label to guide timing. UC IPM; UF/IFAS; UC Cooperative Extension Colusa County.

What fertilizer should you choose?

Both complete liquid fertilizer and controlled-release fertilizer are supported options; no single type is best for every gerbera. Compare the product’s intended use, application interval, and nutrient formulation, then follow its directions. Clemson and UF/IFAS note that gerberas can develop iron and manganese deficiencies, with Clemson noting these can be an issue especially in potting soil. Checking whether a product contains these micronutrients can inform your choice, but that does not mean every plant needs a separate supplement. Clemson Cooperative Extension; UF/IFAS.

Keep growing conditions in view

Fertilizer works alongside suitable growing conditions. The RHS recommends fertile, well-drained soil and a compost mulch for gerberas in the ground. Keep the crown—the point where leaves meet roots—above the soil surface to reduce the risk of rot. RHS.
